The 1988 merc has an automatic emergency brake release that has a valve on the steering column under the dash, when you put the tranny in gear it sends vacuum to the valve on the brake to release it. It could be the valve on the steering column that is the problem. Good luck!
take it back to them ,they have damaged a abs sensor or the metal ring that makes the sensor read a signal ,Also i have a funny feeling they didnt release the handbrake cable on the adjuster so the light is staying on because they either didnt reset it or damaged the switch under the handbrake lever take it back and ask nicely if they can have a look but dont pay them another halfpenny ,because they should have done it properly to start with and not used a 18yr old inexperianced youth instead of a proper technician ,in my time you was not allowed to work on your own till 3rd year of apprenticeship .But i am on old dinasaur
Check to see if your Alternator belt is still on.. If it's connected to your power steering it won't work and your battery will not charge. Also if you hear a whining noise in your engine replace the belt if it's there.
sounds like brake pad sensor damaged or did you forget to put in new pads or removed? if its got one.

This is normal operation. The XL-7 has daytime running lights and automatic headlight controls. You can keep headlights off when starting by applying the handbrake. If / when the daylight sensor on the dash determines it is evening and turns on the headlights, they will come on regardless of the handbrake position; and obviously, if you want to move the car, you have to release the handbrake (and headlights come one).
