There's a battery isolator (splitter) somewhere in the engine compartment, follow the alternator battery wire to find it, if the wiring is good the isolator is bad. I hope this helps.Take care

SOURCE: Don't believe car is charging.

One easy way to see if the alternator is charging is to take a screwdriver, and hold it close to the center of the back of the alternator, where the shaft would be located inside, the alternator should work a s magnet, and draw the screwdriver to it, if not your alternator is not charging.

SOURCE: battery charge light comes on a few minutes after car starts

Couple of things to check, first this may be nothing more than a belt that has loosened or stretched after the install. There should only be about a quarter of an inch stretch in the belt between pulleys. Caution - only check with engine stopped!!! The alternator causes a strong resistance when it is producing electric power, so slippage is to be checked first. Second, if the battery light comes on and off; it maybe acting in error. Get a multi-meter and check the battery voltage with car and ignition shut off. With the meter set on 12volt bat, place the black probe on the negative side of battery or ground and the red probe on the positive side of battery. If you get a reading of 12.66 v the battery is being charged and is full. If you get 12.45 you have a 50% charged battery. If less the alternator wiring needs further checking into as there maybe issues with wiring or the alternator itself. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: wiring diagram for a 1978 dodge 440 engine in a Cobra class A motor home

I am sorry but we do not have any wiring diagrams. You can buy the factory chassis diagrams but not mnot what was added by the motor home builder. If you know what chassis the unit was guilt on you can look up a used manual here.

My Thunderbolt 1.5 Watt solar charger's blue light is not on when it is in the sun. Is this an indicator that it is not charging?

It has to be the socket that has power at all times otherwise the power from the charger can't reach the battery.

And yes, if there are no lights on when supposedly charging, it isn't charging.

You checked the charging voltage at the battery with a ? volt meter ? What was the voltage with the vehicle running ? 13.1 to 14.1 volts ?
BATTERY NOT CHARGING The IPC illuminates the battery not charging indicator in the driver information center when the following occurs:
?€¢
The PCM detects that the generator output is less than 11 volts or greater than 16 volts. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM requesting illumination.

?€¢
The IPC determines that the system voltage is less than 11 volts or greater than 16 volts. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the body control module (BCM) indicating the system voltage

Said alternator was bad

Bad alternator means no battery charge. Run the battery down without a charging means no power and engine will die. Charge the battery and put a meter on it to see if it goes to 14 volts with engine running. If stays under 13 volts with engine running, replace the alternator.

Battery light comes on when engine is off.

Warning on alternators never take positive terminal off battery when engine running a good chance you will fry the regulator or diode plate. Usually when the light stays on with ignition off indicates damaged negative diode in the rectifier. Try removing the warning light wire at the alternator if the light goes out this will indicate the above problem. If not then check if there is a charge relay. Please let me know if you have further problem and include more information on your findings.

What should the charging volts be on my 2007 Dodge Sprinter V6 Diesel when the engine is running?

Do you have any indication that the battery is not being charged properly, such as slow cranking speed when trying to start?
With the engine not running, the battery (fully charged) should show about 12.5 volts with a voltmeter. With the engine running at normal (not idle) speed, the voltage should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts depending on the state of charge of the battery. At idle, the voltage may drop below 13.5 volts depending on how many accessories you have turned on (headlights, a/c, blower motor, radio, etc). If the 12.8 - 12.9 volts you referenced is at idle with accessories on, but increases when you increase engine speed, you're probably OK.

Battery was dead I have charged it up even had it checked to make sure it was good. No problems there but when I put the key in to crank it nothing happen

Same problem on my 2007 3500 Sprinter. Problem was a faulty alternotor. Had to be towed and replaced. Because it is an RV I had a solar panel installed to keep the battery charged. Latest problem was replacing the EGR valve. Fuel problem was only in US . Canadian refined fuel didn't trip the computer. Every time I filled in the US on a recent cross North America trip computer.

The alternator should be charging at 13.5 to 14.5vdc at the battery at engine idle. Some vortec engines had fuseable links running from the alternator.
You could have a bad ground or a cable may be shorted, a stuck relay or something not turning off and causing a drain also. You can run what is called a "parasitic draw test" to determine the source. I hope this helps.
