Unfortunately, overdrive is controlled by a solenoid in the transmission and the usual cause of this is a stuck solenoid which can require a transmission repair. If this is the case, it is usually caused by breakdown of the transmission fluid - fluid needs to be regularly replaced in accordance with the service interval shown in the car manual. However, can also be caused by a wiring problem between various computers in the car and the transmission. You should also check trouble codes using a code reader.
I take help from online websites that have this service like helping in repair some like reliable-store have instant help.. others are a bit slow which I don't prefer... rest is up to u.. U can also get free manuals

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.

check battery voltage, if battery voltage is ok, you may need to check fuses under hood on passengers side, if start fuse is ok, you may need to have your starter replaced
