Is the engine turning over with the starter . If not the starter is not engaging with the engine and the starter motor is faulty . The solenoid that pushes the pinion into the ring gear is not working . That is if it is a conventional starter motor
All answers are good here what are you hearing just a whining starter with no engine movement at all if so the solenoid arm has broken the starter drive gear is not being pushed out to rotate on the spiral gear shaft so it's just spinning in the case without being propelled out to the gear shaft and no engine rotation if your timing chain jumped timing you would have engine rotation at the crankshaft and back firing from out of time firing when there was enough compression to cause it but no engine running at all or a very bad running condition struggling to run with full gas peddle
The question is why do you feel it may have jumped time? Is the engine turning over? Watch the drive belt, if its turning and turning super fast as if the starter drive is spinning and not engaged, i would suspect timing belt. If engine is not turning over but starter is spinning, then i would suspect starter solenoid. Keep is posted
May just need a new starter. The solenoid can go bad. I've had that happen on my Honda where the starter spun but wouldnt try to engage.
If the starter is 'spinning fast' and is NOT turning over the engine, it's possible that the pinion gear is not engaging. When you turn the ignition switch, the starter motor is energized, and the electromagnet inside the body engages. This pushes out a rod to which the pinion gear is attached. The gear meets the flywheel, and the starter turns. This spins the engine over, sucking in air (as well as fuel). At the same time, electricity is sent through the spark plug wires to the plugs, igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber. Is this the symptom your car has? The starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over?
Don't have the car with me, thinking about buying it, but the owner said it jumped timing but when I try and crank the car the starter just spins very fast like its not engaging flywheel didn't know if the hat was a sign of off timing or not, bit I'll look at the teeth of the starter and flywheel if I get it
Yea, if it doesn't crank the engine but goes 'wuhWHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeee' it its not engaging the flywheel. That's not timing, the starter pinion is NOT engaging. Just replace the entire starter. Should cost about $100 or so, depending on the quality...you can go as cheap as $78 and as much as $300.

Diagnosing this will be subject to a process of elimination. It could be the radio, blower motor or any other accessory particularly ones with moving parts; Try switching those off and try to note when this problem occurs and what is on/whatyou are doing. Something is getting hot causing the smell so it will be a situation where the accessory will have to run a while before doing it. It is a possibility that there is an electical curcuit overheating, but less likely. Lets rule out accessories first and give us an update. GL

That's what was finally found by our Cadillac dealer as well. They charged us too much, though.

u have a leak in the heater core the oily smell and mist is anti freeze sounds like a small leak because usually u would have a wet floor if it was large -two choices check and repair as necessary the core or can use an additive with a stop leak they usually work well on small leaks

Not timeing your starter is bad . Now if your engine spines over freely and not pop or backfire it may have jumped time .Or it could be the file pump
