This is not the gas gauge, this problem is caused by the gas gauge sending unit inside the gas tank, drop the gas tank and rep[lace the fuel pump/sending unit module, about $200 for the part from rockauto.com.

if your gas tank is empty of course the gauge is empty,but if the gas is full and the gauge still empty all you have to do is to check the float valve inside the gas tank maybe it is stuck.Or need to change if necessary.
There are three possibilities. The gauge could be defective. The instrument panel voltage regulator could be bad or not grounded or (most expensive) it might be the sending unit.
This problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit inside the gas tank, to change the sending unit requires that the gas tank be removed from the car to access the gas gauge sending unit.

I might suggest pouring a fuel additive in your tank. Possibly you have some condensation/bad gas. Pour it in and let it sit overnight. See if it helps... it won't hurt.

It was the problem I had with mine and two others . The fuel filter in the tank is clogged it lays very close to the botten of the tank sucks up a lot of residue.
Yes you can, its on the Passenger side of the car, right under the back seat under the floor board, track your fuel line from the tank to there. Good Luck.
replace the fuel pump. it is internally shorted
by hitting the gas tank it jars the pump enough to make it run,then it shorts out agin and shuts off also perlace the fuel filter when u replace the fuel pump
