If the problem goes away on it's own, the light will turn off. Otherwise you'll need to bring it to a car shop where they can scan it to retrieve the codes and reset it for you. If you have an OBD-II scanner, you can reset it yourself
You can turn off the check engine light by erasing the trouble codes in your car's computer, but if the problem that caused the check engine light to come on in the first place is still there, then it will come back again. So if you want to stop the check engine light from coming on again and again after erasing the trouble codes, you will have to find out what the code is with a OBD-II code reader and look up the code in the trouble code chart for your car. These are easily available online by Googling "trouble codes OBD-II". If your car runs fine and you know that the trouble code is something very minor, I have seen people remove the bulb to shut it off, but that's obviously not recommended. Many shops will provide an engine diagnosis for you and tell you what the code is and then you can research is and ask again here after you have more information to give me, so that I can help you better.

Open the hood. Locate a small grey box by the firewall, roughly 1.5 x 1.5 inches. It has a cap that will lift up, but it will not come off. Under the cap, located the terminals E1 and Te1. Using a standard paper clip, "jump" E1 and Te1 together. Turn the key on. Obnserve the check engine light; it will flash, pause and flash again. Count the flashes.
Examples: 2 flashes/pause/4 flashes is code "24"
1 flash/pause/5 flashes is code "15"
Get the codes & get that info back to me so that I will be able to assist you with your issue further.

usually when this occurs (engine light) the ecm has detected some type of failure with one or components of the engine. ur gonna need to have a diagnostic scan done to determine the source. If the vehicle is OBD certified autozone part stores will do it for free. to be sure that its not just a minor "hickup" u can reset yous car's ecm urself by disconnecting the positive battery for 1 minute. if the engine light returns then i would have a diagnostic scan done. Get a T belt from toyota. It has 3 white lines on
it and and arrow mark. 2 lines are solid and one is broken. Put the
arrow facing away from the engine. The cam gears have a dot punched
into them near a certain tooth. This is where the solid white lines
will line up with. The crank gear will have a dot also. It will line up
at 90 degrees from the top, towards the front of the car. This is where
the broken line will match up with. With the belt installed with all
lines on their proper dots and arrow away from the engine, you valve
timming is correct.
Of course you need to remove and compress the tensioner also. I assume you know this already since you didn't ask.
