I take it that you have a standard transmission ? there is no adjustment, but on the saturns the plastic insert on the shifter lever (remove the center console) is what breaks, Napa auto parts has the replacement part for about $20, or you can go to saturn and spend $200 on replacing both cables
It may be the shifting cable is split or out of adjustment. You can check this by going under the truck and disconnection the cable at the lever and seeing if you can shift it through all six detents [ park- reverse- neutral- drive- second- first ], The truck shouldn't be running and the wheels blocked. If it moves through all the stops, then it's the cable.
You have a slave cylinder for this trans. Pump the clutch pedal 25 times with the engine OFF. Then start it and try shifting it into each gear while parked. If this make it work your slave cylinder needs to be replaced
It sounds like the shift lever is out of adjustment by a small amount. Try moving the shift lever a little bit forward & backward from it's normal position to see if this is the case.
If I understand you correctly, you have ALL forward gears working, but reverse doesn't?... then the problem is in the transmission itself or the linkage on the trans linkage into reverse.
HI, there is a solenoid(switch) that's located in shift linkage housing that works in conjunctions with the brake pedal when you shift from park to reverse or drive. this is a safety situation.
Sometimes, this solenoid(switch) can malfunction or die. In this case, it will prevent the gear shift lever from moving into the reverse or parked position. Simply replacing this shift lever solenoid will fix this issue. You can expose the solenoid by disassembling the shift stick housing,
I initially tried to override the Brake / Transmission switch by disconnecting the battery but that did not work. I solved the problem by disconnecting the wiring from the actual gearbox, and manually moving the linkage at the gearbox. After doing that everything was re-connected and now works fine.
