I have a 1997 Z3 and the top has stopped working. The last time I opened it I first struggled for a few minutes and eventually it started retracting very, very slowly. It closed fine when I wanted to close it. Now, it doesn't open anymore though. Not sure what the problem could be. When I hit the switch I can't hear any sound. And, to make matters worse, I understand very little of cars. Is it something I can check out and solve myself...like a fuse or something?

You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is your motor/pump/reservoir combination.
With the top down, fill the reservoir to overflowing with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times and repeat.
Do this till the reservoir will take no more fluid.
Check the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going somewhere.
If you replace any lines or cylinders, always do them in pairs.

This happenrd to me the first few times after filling the tank. When the roof stops push the switch to up then back until movement stops then go back to down, eventually it will get rid of all the air in the system and the roof should start to work.
has to be rest and tested by bmw dealship something has caused the roof to stop possible the control unit failed, a faulty microswitch in roof or the straps in the roof have failed and thrown it out of timing, cauing it to shout down system.
