I don't know year--make--model of vehicle? If your talking about radiator fan, if you unplug it, that should kill it till you figure out the problem. Part of your post says "rough ideal", are you saying, rough idle? The basics for a rough idle, check for a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum. How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes?

SOURCE: cooling fans will not run

Most GMs use a relay package to turn on the fans. That is often controlled through a processor package. Very complicated...if yours is one of them. You will need Mitchell's manual or equal to trace this to see if you have all the signals.

SOURCE: cooling fan not working

The fans only run when the engine reaches approxminatly 235 degrees F. on the guage that is near the end of scale just before guage show "HOT" I don't think you have a problem, allot of folks out there don't know about this.

SOURCE: Cooling fan wont work

The water temp sensor is located near the thermostat housing. This sensor is what tells the ECM to turn the fan on/off. The water temp sending unit is located near the same area. You know you have the correct sensor is because the water temp sensor has a 2 prong plug. The water temp sending unit only has 1 prong.

The fan wont work car does not get hot shut off

cooling fan works on a temp sensor in the engine block. it only turns on when the temp reaches a set limit and shuts off when it gets below a set limit.. cooling fan components are , fans, fan relay , and temp sensor . best way to test the fans would be to let the car set running and watch the temp till it goes up to 185 -195 deg. at this time the fans should turn on and the thermostat should open and cool the engine back down. also when ever the air conditioning is on so should the cooling fans be on. if the fans do not run the check all components till you find the broken one. fan relay and air conditioning relay are separate but work the same. and will interchange

02 mini cooper cooling fan problem...fuse was blown..power steering fan was locked up..replaced it and the fuse now the cooling fan will only come on with the a/c

Once again, computer, computer, computer! there is a control panel associated with the coolin/fan system. It is intergrated with the radiator, cooling fans, air flow sensors, A/C, engine temp sensors, etc.. So you are going to have to take it in to a qualified mechanic. They will be able to determine what needs fixin and or replacing. Had the same problem wit my A/C fan and sensor system. For over a year I had rigged up a toggle switch that I taped to the intake manifold (I think). And every time the temp gauge went up. Out I went, Hood up and switch, switched. I just had to remember to turn it off when I left the car. Otherwise it would run down the battery.
Hope this helped,

1986 Mazda 323 coolant fan comes on when motor is hot and stays on.

Is the engine actually cooling off? If the temp switch isn't seeing a drop in temperature, it will keep the fan running.

The fan should shut down after the radiator temperature is between 180-195 degrees. If yours is staying on way below this I would think you temp. sensor is stuck and keeping your fan on.

Drive for about 15 mins and car get to a warm temp and then suddenly turns off with no hesitation missing or warning then will not start again for 30 mins when it has cooled down, temp doesnt get hot.

To start with check the coolant level in radiator...Your vehicle is equipped with a head temp sensor that is designed to shut motor down before it reaches temp. that will result in engine damage..If level is ok then i would look at the water pump at being your next culprit. In either case i would definetly check your temp. sending unit to make sure its operational due to the fact you state that vehicle doesnt get hot...Another thing you can check is to make sure that your cooling fan turns when car gets hot...If fan doesnt come (after you have made sure coolant temp sensor is operational) check fan relay located in power distribution box in engine compartment...

Audi A3 2001 radiator fan ruuning all of the time

yeah try to change the sensor.maybe it is busted. normally, most of the late-model cars comes with a fan feature that turns of after 5 or 10 mins even after switching off the engine. this helps to cool down first the engine to reach its desirable temperature before it is totally shut down. its good that your radiator fan has a feature like that. aftermarket perfomance fans do come with that feature because it takes care of the engine state.just try to change the sensor for engine temp

Over-heating issue

2000 LS cooling system is a very tough system to diagnosis. Any kind of air in system will totally stop the flow and cause it to heat. That is the reason it has 2 places to bleed the air from the system. The one at the engine where the upper hose connects and one beside the brake booster near the degas bottle(rubber tube with a screw end).
The cooling fan is also hydraulic and has it's own power steering pump.
The good thing about this system is that it uses a cylinder head temp sensor that measures the metal temp and not engine coolant temp. When the PCM sees the CHT reach a certain temp it will start shutting down 4 cylinders at a time and use these cylinders as actual air pumps to help cool the engine down.If this does not work it will then shut the engine down totally until the temps come back down.

The most common problems we see are thermostats, crack degas bottle,or a leak somewhere, and of course air in the system. Have not seen a cracked head yet however did see one that pushed the plug out of the cooling port in the head but this also filled the oil with coolant.
Have also seen cooling fans that would not work until PCM demmanded high speed, caused by a weak power steering pump.

95 grand am radiator fan only runs with AC on

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.
I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson
