Turn on the key and go to the rear of the vehicle. you should hear it humming. failing that just remove the gas cap and listen.

Perform a presure test at the engine, but there are two pumps on this models, one low pressyre pump in the tank and a high pressure one mounted on the vehicle frame that is the one that go bad more often,so its not a pain to replace, also you can perform a volume test(this one all you need to do is unhook the line to the fuel rail and place the line in a container,at idle it should pump about a pint in 20 seconds.for the pressure test you need a presure gauge the pressure should be between 40 to 50 pounds and hold it for about 10 min.

Ya there are a few simple things , just listen for the hum of the fuel pump when you first turn the key to the position just before start, this is a large vehicle so have an assistant listen down toward the back wherte the gas tank is the hum should be present for about 3 - 5 seconds the shut off if this sound si present the fuel pump is activating and building up pressure in the fuel line, the next step is to check the fuel pressure with a high pressure fuel pressure tester at the fuel rail located on top of the motor, there is a access valve with a black cap where you can check fuel pressure, however the price of the tester is about $60.00 also make sure the vacuum line at the fuel pressure regulator located at the end of the fuel rail is not broken or cracked in any way.

Got 2 89 F 250's. both had same problem. after buying the book and reaing thru it I found there is a way to GROUND one of the wires in the DLC connector on drivers fender well. With a van Idk if it will be located in the same spot, however, with both trucks it allowed me to immediately tell the pump was working just fine and in both cases was a fault in the fuel pump relay plug that was hidden. I am replacing the fuel pump therefore i am taking the bed off for easy acess i need proper instructions like light disconnections

Best way to accomplish this task is to leave the back two bed bolts on and just loose. then just hoist up the front of the bed and prop it up. I have done numerous fuel pump changes this way.

Where is access to fuel pump without dropping gas tank

There is no access other than dropping the fuel tank. On a pickup you can raise the bed but this is not an option for you. It is not a huge deal to drop the tank, however it is difficult to reinstal the lock ring while putting the new pump in.

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, the best way to do this is to get some friends and remove the bed from the frame. There is i believe 8 bolts that hold the bed to the frame, and don't forget to remove the hardware to the gas tank filler neck. Once the bed is off the frame, you can get to the fuel tank. Disconnect the wire harness and might as well replace the harness since there only $12.00 last i looked, disconnect the fuel line and return line. Remove the fuel pump retainer ring and lift up on the fuel pump sending unit. To install replace the rubber O ring and oil it before installing the new fuel pump sending unit. Install the fuel sending unit retaining ring, gas lines, new wire harness, and filler tube. Good lime also to check the hose to the EVAP since you can inspect them, look for any dry rot to the vacuum lines and replace if needed. Reinstall the bed and use lock tight to the bed bolts or replace them with stainless bolts. Good luck and hope this helps, oh and you might as well change the fuel filter while your have the bed off. The other way is to drop the gas tank which means draining the tank and raising the truck.

Rotation but no start

You probably aleady solved it by now but there is a good chance that your fuel pump is shot. It requires apx 55psi to operate. It will still let fuel go but if it drops below around 50psi the vehicle will just shut off. If you do replace the fuel pump the best way to do it is to remove the drivers side bed bolts and loosen the passenger side bolts almost all the way. Disconnect the filler tube then raise the bed and you can access the pump from there without dropping the tank. Ensure that you put a block or something between the bed and the frame rails so it doesn't drop on you.

The fuel pressure check valve is on the right side of the intake towards the fire wall.

These fuel pumps go out all of the time and can even cause your fuel tank to implode, I had it happen to me.

Hope this helps you or someone else with the same problem
