most four wheel drives do not spin both front tires other wise you would hop around corners, that being said you should be able to stop the spinning side tire by holding it in place ,do this before the tire starts spinning ,then the other side should spin.if not you have a problem start with the axle and work your way back in the drive train, simple process of elimination..the grinding noise sounds like a broken gear tooth in the tranny.requires tear down and replace gear.take it to a professional.hope this helps
mcdevito75, The tranny has a front pump to pump fluid back and forth to the torque converter, a seal must be leaking fluid into the diff. also the diff, has tranny fluid in front wheel drive cars so tranny fluid in the diff. is normal, Tranny will have to come out to check that front pump, or fron tranny seal.
yes there are ,transmission fluid dipstick is on drivers side near starter, diff is on passenger side. if you just drained the pan the trans should take about 4 quarts of fluid, diff will take just about 1 quart of 80-90 w
there is a plug on the shaft-side of the differential. Using a ratchet remove the plug and with the engine OFF, stick your finger inside the hole and you should get fluid just below the threads of where the plug goes in.
Hello, from your description it sounds like your front differential has, for lack of a better term, exploded! the grinding noise is the ring and pinion in the front differential trying to turn w/ the rest of the transmission but most or all of the gear teeth have been broken off. There are 3 sections of your transmission: the front section which is the front differential, the center section which is where all of your main clutch packs and planetary gear sets are, and the rear section which houses your tranfer clutches. Your front differential contains gear oil and the center and rear section contains auto trans fluid. You need to check your front diff fluid, this is the fluid that is most likely covering your undercarriage. Usually this concern can be repaired as long as the damage isn't to great, but to assess the damage the transmission must be removed and pulled apart. Here is a diagram of where to find your front diff dip stick. The dip stick is located on the opposite side of where the transmission fluid dip stick is. It's yellow and you have to be standing on the passengers' side of the engine compartment, make sure the engine is cold so you won't get burned, not that you'd be driving it anyway. You must reach down just behind the bell housing on the side of the transmission itself and just lift straight up. I hope this info helps...(subytech1)...
Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.
If the front brakes were ok, I would have a look at a possible wheel bearing problem. Does the problem change noises at different speeds or is the problem only heard when breaking.
