WHERE IS THE SERPENTINE BELT LOCATED ON A 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA

Vehicles Covered: Hyundai Sonata 2002-2004 (2.4L & 2.7L Engines)

In 2003, Hyundai produced two types of Sonata:
Available engines:
4 Cylinders 2.4L VIN "S", MFI DOHC - see Figures 1 and 3.
6 Cylinders 2.7L VIN "H", MFI DOHC - see Figures 2 and 3.

To differentiate between these types of 2003 Hyundai Sonatas, the VIN 8th digit (Engine Type) will either be "S" or "H" as in the table above.

To locate the Engine drive belt, jack up the vehicle & place it onto jack stands, then slide under the car (toss a cardboard mat down first), then, once under the car, remove the (plastic) engine splash shield. Once removed, the drive & accessory belts are easily observed.

Fig. 1 Accessory Drive Belt Routing 2.4L (4 cyl) Engine - Hyundai Sonata
The "COMPRESSOR" refers to the A/C compressor, and "GENERATOR" refers to the Alternator.

The Belt Routing on the Left is "With A/C", on the Right is "without A/C"

Inspection - Drivebelt and Accessory Belts

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. Worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced.

Drivebelt Removal & Installation - 2003 Sonata (2.4L and 2.7L engines)

Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the engine splash shield.
Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.

To install:

Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
Install the drive belt to the alternator.
Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
Slowly release the drive belt tensioner
Install the engine splash shield.
Lower the vehicle.

Here's the best illustration I can find of the Hyundai 2.4L and 2.7L engines - the drivebelt seems to be located on the passenger side of both of these transversely mounted engines.

I have 2001 Hyundai sonata and time belt and valve are broken

Must have Cylinder Head reconditioned at a shop $275-400, and replace broken belt and bearings with a new timing component kit $100. Labor varies by location as a guess.. $400 for a single head and $600 for V-6. Gasket set $100. If its a V-6 both heads need to come off and be serviced.

all in all about $1100 for a 4 cylinder and $1300 for a V-6.
Not a do it yourself project. Call around different shops for prices and warranty on work.

Good Luck!

Timing belt replacement interval

My rule of thumb for Timing belts:
replace at 60,000 miles, and every 40,000 miles thereafter. Having said that, I often let
cars go until the timing belt starts showing signs of wear (usually every 50K - 75K miles)

But www.autozone.com (register free at www.autozone.com) is recommending for your
car driving in "severe driving conditions" (aka normal stop-start driving) that your 2000 Sonata
have:
60,000 miles - replace
90,000 miles - inspect for wear
120,000 miles - replace
150,000 miles - inspect for wear

The 155 page owners manual (I found one at the link below - you may prefer to try Hyundai)
makes no mention of the timing belt at all.

I replaced water pump on v6 and now car wont start. Is it possible to installl the timing belt incorrectly because i didnt do it myself?

If someone who knows how to change a timing belt didnt do it, then it is most likely wrong. Timing belts are one of the more delicate things to change. it the gear/pully, location needs to be marked on the block with the #1 cylinder at TDC (top dead center) before removal or it will be installed wrong. I hope this help. Please rate this Thank You
