Jaguar xj 2004 (x350 design) - ''gearbox fault'' came on the dashboard with amber light, and the Sport button would not work. Drove10 miles and parked up. 2 hours later restarted and gearbox fault light was off. Haven't driven it much since then to know if it will reappear again.

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

the Jaguar does not have a electronic water poump, only the x350 xjr has a auxilary coolant pump for the supercharger.All x350 xj8 models have a conventional water pump.

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

This means that your heater is clogged up. It seems to be a common problem with the x350. Did you try flushing the system (opposite direction)?

check the fan speed resister block... located under the dash in the duct work near the fan. i may have failed
