I have a 2000 vw jetta thay cranks over and starts... and cut off immediately. it is fi the fuel shut off soon after it starts. i changed the fuel pump, but the problem continues.

the bypass may have cut off the fuel pump...cycle the key to hear it to make sure then chk fuel injector for same th

FUEL CUT OF, OR FUEL SHUT OFF SOLENOID.

check for spark when turning over if no spark change the coil lots of coils on vw go bad if you have spark then its the throttle body ..

check fuel rail pressure with a gage from renting from auto shop shold hold 30 PSI for 60 seconds if not replace fuel pump.

try checking the throttle position sensor or the idle control valve both can keep it from running.

try fuel filter first, and see if there is any difference.

indicates the diesel injector control module is faulty
check wiring
have the codes read at a service shop that has the scanner to do the job

Either you threw a belt or the alternator went bad. Your symptoms sound like alternator...you were running on the battery till you ran out of power.

You need to Replace the Fuel Pump.
