Recently aquired and its a superb car, Im well happy with it (or was!). Yesterday I noticed the warning light 'orange diagram of engine' came on, when starting. Today on again and wouldnt start, after a few minutes was ok. This evening same again but did not start at all, after few hours when cold it started. All electrics are ok, everything is fine, but ignition gives no power to starter motor. Looking in the manual I see the warning refers to:- " Exhaust emission values have deteriorated. Please arrange for the problem to be examined by BMW service." Can anyone tell me if this is a serious problem? I can get it diagnosed by a local technician who knows the car. Is it an expensive problem to resolve. Hope you have enough info to advise. Any comments much appreciated.

It would appear that there is a crack in the exhaust manifold or a faulty manifold gasket. The fault light may be the ECM warning of a "faulty" O2 sensor which is the one after the cat converter as the ECM reads the differences in voltages between the front sensor ( HO2S) and the O2 sensor. That is how it knows of such things as faulty cat converter, manifold leaks ,manifold leaks etc.
If it is not under warranty find an accredited shop that specialises in you make of car for a second opinion, but if still covered by warranty complain very loudly to the manufacturer about the service dealer.
Sounds to me that the O2 sensors are sensing a problem with the emissions, or other emision controls have detected a problem that may not necessarily cause a driveability issue.
If you have emissions inspections in your area of the country, then I would have it repaired before the next inspection.
Have the OBD-II scanner check out the computer codes and descriptions by Autozone or Advance Auto Parts for free, or buy your own scanner for under $100 from Sears or Walmart.
try a simple diy job of replaceing the lambda probe (in between the exhaust manifold and the first box on the exhaust pipe).a quickfit type exhaust centre will do it in mins..
That sounds like you bought big problems. Oil ights indicate low oil pressure= BIG BUCKS. I would have a qualified repair shop check it out, A shop that specializes in BMW. If you are lucky, maybe the oil sender is just bad. They can also check out the Ck eng light. But the oil light is priority one.
the light is on due to a fault in the system controls of the egnine or emission control system, have the system tested for trouble codes that aare stored when ever the light is turned on by the PCM (powertrain control module)
Reading the fault code is the first place to start - without doing this it will be very difficult, but spark plugs are a good starting point for misfiring.
The Exhaust Emission Light can come on if the car is driven slowly over short distances. It will not happen on cars driven at speed. A short trip of ten miles at over 3000 revs should reset the warning light, although it may not go out for a couple of days after you have tried it . Hope this helps and saves a bill at the local dealer. JK
it will not pass the test with the light on, and if u turn off the light they will know when they test it by testing/checking the system readiness function. Go to a Kragen or an Autozone they will run the test to see what trouble code has turned the light on, it is free, post the code back here. Oh have then reset the light after the test.
