I have a 2001 camaro that wont shift out of 1st gear and the speedo does not work either. i just put the engine and trans in out of a donor car (a 2000 camaro) both had 3800 series ll engines and 4l60e trans. they both worked fine in the donor car. i have swaped the pcms back and forth a few times and i took the vss from the original trans and put it in the donor trans with no change to my problem. i cannot afford to take it to a trans shop so any help would be greatly appreciated. tom

They fail a lot & over & over again

run the fault codes and look for a faulty TCM unit.

sounds like the gear box ecu has a fault. should have a light on the dash board flashing if not the bulb may have gone. is the speedo working as gear box faults can make it say you are not moving. some time can be fixed if you take the battery off give it a home charge. 2 - 3 hours then put back on but remember you will need the code to put back in the radio when the battery is put back on so would find that first before taking off the battery

Hi James, The gear changes on modern vehicles is often controlled by speed sensors mounted onto each wheel. The sensors also control the ABS, traction control and activate the speedo. Have a diagnostic scan carried out and determine if the sensors are all in working condition. Regards John

I'm thinking straight up, just too many confusing answers. If your engine light is on then of corse their are allot of possible problems. Your throttle Positioning Control Sensor gone bad can cause the trans to not shift or not shift right and will cause engine light to be on. Then possibly Bank 3 Oxygen Sensor has gone bad and can cause the ****** to never come out of 1st gear. Always have your sensors tested first before buying cause of corse, they are non-refundable.

Check fluid level and color. If good, test neutral safety switch for shorts and opens (use ohmmeter).

swaps are super complex topics, endless possibles.

dont expect magic from any TCM.
they cant tell you ever possible way things can be wrong
it will fail to shift right if things are wrong,
the trans TCM can go to limphome mode, read the service manual chapter 21 yet its free, posted here 300 times.
forget the silly engine , light (CEL) use only a scan tool one that can read all factory codes not some $20 tool.
CEL lamp is for failing smog. only. never trust it, if out.

i say bad shift solinoids.
the TCM can see late shift error.s but maybe not all.
stick in 1st is a hard failure.
all inputs to the TCM must be correct for the shift to 2nd happens.
check all inputs.
if those are then see if the TCM did shift to 2nd, but the solenoids ignored the logic inputs to the solenoids.
solenoids have many failure mods
dead. (stuck closed)
stuck open, valve open.
or leaking. (leaking can cause stuck in 1st and confuse any TCM)

leaking means breached, valve leaks where it must not. ever.

if the speedo is not working then it probley needs a speed sensor this will also cause the trans not to shift

if it has a kick down cable that could be the problem look for a cable running from throttle to trans that can be adjusted in length
