Get a manual for a 86 ford econoline from an auto parts store.

mine is a v8 and it does the same thang what is it that is happing

On fords you need a fully charged battery or you may burn up the replacement alt.

It souds like your system is overcharging..... check to make sure the charging system is charging between 13.5volts and 15.3volts at 3000rpms if more than that the voltage regulator is defective and needs replacement,if this situation occurred and the van was used for an extended period then you may have cooked the battery too... It will not be long that it may go bad.

alternators are available for the econoline from 60 amps up to a couple hundred amps ...if you have only stock electrical things then 60 amp should do fine ... if you have added items that use lots of power like fog lights, ham radio, seat heaters, powered winch etc .. then you might want to consider a larger alternator ... here is a list of some available replacements...

you have a voltage drop.fine the damaged wire going fro mthe positive terminal of your battery to your alternator.fix this or it will keep working the alternator and draining your battery.

If you mean that when you adjust the tensioner to put the belt on, and you still don't have enough slack to get the belt on....try loosening the the alternator.

I went to the auto parts store where I bought the alternator.They had a tech their that knew alot about
fords and she help me resolve my delema.
