How to change the thermostat on a Kia Sephia, 2001? I sudennly noticed the temperature rose to almost the Hot mark so I immediately wound down the windows and turned up the fan full blast and cranked up the heat to max and switched the vents on. I noticed the gauge dropping and then rose again. This happened about 5 times before I made it home. Now I wish to attempt to change it. I can hear the fan running so I know that it is not the fan. Now where is the location of the thermostat?

Where is the thermostat and how do I replace it?

  • it is located on the engine (block - in the front).

  • Make sure the engine is completely cool prior to working on the engine. Then place the drain pan underneath the radiator. Open the petcock at the base and let out approximately 1 gallon of coolant.

  • 2

Unbolt the thermostat housing from the front of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Coolant will pour out at this point, so be ready for it and aim the hose toward the drain pan if possible. Remove the thermostat and the thermostat gasket.

  • 3

Clean all of the mating surfaces on the engine and thermostat housing using the gasket scraper. Then install a replacement thermostat in the housing, with the thermostat orienting the same way as the original. Then install the gasket and the thermostat housing on top of it. Bolt it in place using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • 4

Open the radiator cap and fill the radiator with the 50-50 pre-diluted coolant. Turn on the car and let it run for 15 minutes while the interior heat is set on the "high" position. Allow the car to cool for an hour, then add any additional coolant needed

How to replace thermostat on 200 kia sephia

So long as the meter does not go into the Red/Orange zone, then it is likely just getting hotter because of the hot weather.

You can help avoid any problems by not driving in stop and go traffic and trying to park the car in shady spots when you can. Not driving for more than an hour helps and driving with the Vent on will help too (but it will make it extra hot inside the car, lol).

If it reaches the red zone, then park it and get ready, cause it's time to replace the thermostat and do a general tune up.

Car is overheating changed thermostat didn't help

Without more information, it is possible you have a air bubble in the coolant or a blown head gasket. Check the exhaust for smells of coolant (sweet) and the oil for signs of coolant as well, it will look like a milkshake. If you notice an excessive amount of visible bubbles in the overflow tank then more than likely you have a head gasket problem and the cooling system is being pressurized from the leak. To bleed the coolant system, remove the radiator cap and start the car and you should observe small bubbles rising to the top, again if there is an excessive amount then you have a head gasket problem.
