I own a 2001 galant es 4cyl. automatic and started my car up 2 days ago and noticed a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. I opened the hood and the noise was coming from the area where the timing belt cover is located. I just replaced the timing belt last year and had some problems with the work done and took it back. What could the knocking noise be? The noise is constant when idling and driving and I think it may be getting louder.

That sounds terminal, it sounds like they forgot to fill with oil. Your big end bearing are shot.

Is it metalling sound ? if that's the case then don't drive it .. you might be having issues with connecting rod or the bearings in the both cases engine will seize. Consult a auto technician, but you wont have engine light on due to this.

If it is knocking due to misfire (which is mostly the case as the engine light is also on) .... than find which cylinder have the issue then clean or replace the spark plug. If you can get a scanner to read the car computer it will solve the issue in a blink. Otherwise start the engine ... open the hood .pull out spark plug connector one by one and notice the change in sound... the one that is bad will have no effect on the sound.

Knocking noise sound like no oil in the engine noise probably come from the bearing on the crank shaft if it that time to change the engine

The probable causes are: 1. The drive belts are slipping. 2. The drive pulleys for some engine accessories are misaligned. 3. You have turned the steering wheel to the limits. 4. The drive belts are loose.5. Your brake drum backing plates are rubbing against the brake drum. The brakes also might be a problem. check the brake drums/discs. Finally check your wheel and wheel alignment.

Be gentle with my rating. I am a long ways away. It sounds like a fan belt. You should pop the hood next time and see how it sounds when you have the squeeling going on. Fan belts will squeel until the get warmed up and then stop because the heat makes them grab the way they are ment too. Let me know, Raz

how is the oil level and pressure?, how many miles on engine? is this a loud knock or rather a clatter/ticking noise? knock is engine rod or crankshaft bearings, clatter loud ticking is valve follower noise. how long before it (the noise) goes away?

The whirring noise sounds like something broke inside your tranns. so it is likely to require a rebuild.

it is big end bearing.

Does this appear to happen when the fan is going? Try having your fan belt checked.
