2002 Kia Spectra stuck gear shift

Make sure the brake lights are coming on if not the release solenoid that unlocks park gets no power and will not release the shifter from park position. Also check the owner's manual for a possible way to override the solenoid lock.

check to see if your brake lights are working .if not look for blown fuse or brake light switch or bulbs their should be a override slot or procedure to release from park.release solenoid is not working.

shifter cable either broke or came disconnected

if stuck in park sound like the shift lock solenoid. try moving it with the key turned to the first click. or is it not moving after it is in gear?

this is very common with these cars the shift shaft goes through the aluminum case below the neutral safety switch then is exposed 3 inches befofre it goes into the transmission to shift the case is supposed to be a guide this corrodes you need to use a silicone based lubricant to free it up. Have some one spray under the switch while you hold the brake (key on engine off) and move the shifter from park to first approximately 2 min or thirty times

The switch should lock the shifter in park . And you should need a key to release it. It is a child safe safety that has been installed since the 70's on all US sold auto's.
