Re: how to replace a water pump on a 5.3 liter sierra
I suggest that you visit the autozone.com website and register the vehicle. It doesn't cost anything and will give you access to an online repair manual. The steps for replacing the water pump should be available there. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Michael is correct on replacing water pump but if you are mech. inclined it can be done by removing upper fan shroud and serp. belt only. leave fan on pump until removed. remove 4 15mill bolts and the whole assembly. apply gasket sealer to both sides of gasket and insert 2 upper bolts to keep gasket in place when reinstalling.I have a 1998 gmc and did this a couple days ago while installing injection spider.
You probably have hydroboost brakes and that system is powered by the power steering unit. If you have no steering and brakes, the first thing to check is the power steering pump. Check for low/no fluid. If the fluid is okay then the pump might not be pumping and you will need to replace it.
I am guessing you have a 5.7 liter engine. remove your hoses belt, and upper fan shroud, fan and pulley. then there should be four bolts to take out for the pump to come off. clean gasket surface good and reinstall in reverse order with thread sealer on the four bolts and gasket sealer on the gasket.
u can do the check the other way around/ disconnect the fuel line that supply the injectors/ put the pipe in a small plastic container to see if fuel is being supplied by the pump and avoid fuel spill in ur engine/ crank the engine for at least 5 seconds see if the fuel squirts with pressure/ if it does then ur fuel pump is ok / blockage is somewhere down the fuel line/ u can check fuel lines by blowing it with air but u gonna need the help of an air compressor.....
You need to locate the water pump. It is turned by a fan belt. There should be water hoses running into and out of the pump. Water pumps have a weep hole that leaks water when the pump starts to fail. It is usually hard to see as it is behind the pulley for the fan belt. If you're seeing a leak in this area it is a pretty good chance that the pump is bad and needs replaced.
hi,first off you have to remove the acc. drive belts, ac,alt.,pwr str belt etc.but loosen up the 4 bolts that hold the fan to the water pump.then remove any brackets 4 bolts hold the water pump in place and remove water hoses before removing pump bolts. clean and replace gaskets and pump reinstall all parts and added coolant .also you may want to replace thermostat.
first what you want to do is locate the water pump. then release then tension off the belt that it is connected to. there should be 2 or 3 bolts and undo them and pull it out. then replace with the new one.
Open the hood of your truck. Look inside the engine bay. See the fan assembly and the pulley that the belt rides on. The water pump is behind the pulley. Changing water pumps can be somewhat of a task. Professional help will be needed for someone that can't find the waterpump. The water pump is on the passenger side front of the engine; I had to drain the coolant, I kept the belt in place, then I removed the 3 bolts from the pulley to give me access to the bolts on the top (it will require a set of metric tools for it). Then I removed the passenger side front tire and the splash cover from under the car just above the tire, removed all bolts that holds the pump on the lower part of it, then removed the belt, scraped and clean very well the old gasket. The new water pump came with a new gasket, so I just got a gasket maker and applied to the gasket, so I did not have to do it again. Work backwords to reinstall everything, good time to replace the coolant and if you have not done yet, replace the thermostat valve along with any hose that may be cracked, rigid or enlarged (check the hoses to the heater core also). Please check your belts and hoses so you will not have to redo the process again.
