As you order the sensors they have their own part number and it will be on the package. The metal sensors will look the same but the wires and connectors will be different in length so you can also tell them apart and compare them with the old ones. Change them one at a time.

SOURCE: Installing 02 sensors

"Up-stream" means before the catalytic converters and are probably in the header pipe(s). The "down-stream" O2 sensors are behind the cats in the exhaust system, usually just behind them. Not the expert here on this particular car but there are probably 4 of these sensors. BMW exhaust systems are very tight on space, be careful tackling this job.

Upstream, as in ahead of the converter, back toward engine. Start at converter and work your way back, should be on exhaust pipe or even on manifold.

1/1 is upstream sensor on the number 1 cylinder side, 1/2 is the downstream of the number 1 cylinder side, 2/1 is the upstream of the number 2 cylinder side, 2/2 is the downstream of the number 2 cylinder side. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 420 code catalyst system efficiency below

You could have an enefficient converter. Question is what caused it to go bad? I have attended seminars on code 420, Possible causes are lack of spark or clogged fuel injectors. there have been times where the spark plug wire lays on the engine and over time it wears a weak spot in the side of the wire, its not enough to throw a miss fire code but it keeps the full amount of spark from getting to the plug and not burning the all the fuel in the cyl. A leaky injector would also cause to much fuel to be deliverd into the cyl and not get burned.

Hope this helps.

If it is a 3.0 then there should be one downstream and 2 upstream I think. The downstream sensors are different than the upstream, but the two upstream ones are the same part #

2003 honda civic o2 how to replace And how do i fin out which once is it

Hi Jesus, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

If you have a 4 cylinder engine then you will only have two 02 sensors 1/1 is upstream and 1/2 is downstream. Upstream is the one closet to the engine and downstream is the one farther away from the engine.

If you have a six OR eight cylinder engine you will have four 02 Sensors. 1/1 means Bank One Sensor One. 1/1 and Bank one means right bank and right bank means the side with the number 1 spark plug. SO, 1/1 means, "Right Bank" Upstream 02 sensor. 1/2 means, "Right Bank" Downstream 02 sensor.

2/1 means, "Left Bank" Upstream 02 sensor and 2/2 means, "Left Bank" Downstream 02 sensor. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website at: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

How many oxygen sensor on a 02 chevy blazer

Hi, there are 4 sensors on your truck--two upstream and 2 downstream. The upstream sensors are mounted in the exhaust manifolds and the downstream sensors are mounted just behind the catalytic converters. The upstream and downstream sensors are different. Bank 1 is on the driver's side and bank 2 is on the passenger's side. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

I have a 1998 ford windstar and i need upstream & downstream 02 sensor but i dont know if i need 1 or 2 upstream sensors.

assueming it has the v-6 in it look at the exhaust pipe comming off the side of the engine there will be two up stream 02 sensors which are heated and one downstream past catalitic conveter. If may have the second style with the Y cross over with 1 upstream before the cat and one after. The difference between the 0-2 sensors is the upstrean are heated so it goes into closed loop faster. I find that on most of these the up stream 02 sensor heaters have failed. You can go to a Autozone and they can pull the codes for you and tell you which side it is that needs to be replaced. However 02 sensors get old after time and they start shifting slowly, if it shifts slowly then it's called a lazy 02 sensor. And will send a code to the computer, if you get the trouble code of the 02 sensor heater is bad you will have to change it, I recommend Replacing both. The reason is if one is going bad the other will soon follow. You can buy a socket wrench For the 02 sensors for 12 dollars makes it real easy to replace the 02 sensors when they are COLD. Hope this helps and thanks for using fix-ya.

Need to replace the 02 sensor on my 1992 chevrolet corvette, I have the sensor but trying to figure out where it goes underneath the car??

there should be more than one 02 sensor so make sure to replace the correct one, but anyways they screw into the exhaust pipe usually near where the pipe meets the exhaust manifold

Exact location of downstream O2 sensor.

Downstream O2 sensor is after (downstream) the catalitic converter on the exhaust pipe. Upstream O2 sensor is after (downstream) the engine exhaust manifold - before (upstream) the catalitic converter. Upstream O2 sensor controls air-to-fuel ratio to yield a small excess oxygen. Downstream O2 sensor assesses the catalitic converter performance.

O2 Sensor

Well, Bank 1 is the passenger side of the vehicle. Are you replacing upstream or downstream 02 sensor?

The upstream is in the exhaust manifold. The downstream is further down in the exhaust pipe. Upstream would be designated by the code HO2S1- B1 and the downstream would be indicated HO2S2-B1.

In either case, you basically unplug the wiring connector, use a 7/8 wrench (or an O2 sensor socket which has a groove cut in the side to allow the wiring to not be pinched) and loosen the sensor and install the new one (with anti-seize on the threads) and plug the connector in.

The upstream sensor is pretty easy- the downstream can be a little more difficult, but is not too bad.

Hope this is helpful!!
