remove front wheel brakes, rotors, axle nut, remove the four bolts on the bake side of your unit bearing using one of the 4 bolts removed from the unit bearing (also knowin as wheel bearing) go get a half dozen of the same bolt only 1 to 2 inchs longer theard them into the unit bearing from the back side and start beating. the unit bearing is a sob to get out but will come out with time once you get it out pull out your axle shaft replace the ujoint and reassemble anti seize everything as you re assemble it

SOURCE: 2004 ford f150 4x2 4.6 drive shaft has vibration

check the U-joints by grabbing the drive shaft and try to make it move from side to side or top to bottom. It is much easier to do this if the vehicle is in the air and no weight on the axle.If it does move replace that U-joint,but if you are going to replace one then I would do both since you will have the drive shaft out any way. Also check to see if the shaft weight is still there, but I doubt it has came off its pretty rare.

SOURCE: how do i replace the rear universal joint on a 1995 pontiac firebird

Usually there are two clamps that come off, then the joint caps are pressed out of the drive shaft.

How do I fix my F150 Ford from squeaking on the front driver side.

It's your universal joints. Your universal joints have become warn and what's happening is as you accelerate its moving and the loose universal joints are moving which is causing the noise. It occurs at low speeds because of a slight wobble as speed increases the wobble goes away and so does the noise. It's best to change the font and back at the same time you can find them at your local part store starting at $19.99 each. As for your front end lubricate it real good. Hope this was helpful.

I have a 1998 Ford F150 4.2 motor V-6 4x4. When I put it in drive it will not go forward. I looked underneath and my drive shaft is really loose how do I fix it. I think that my drive train is broke...

Sounds like your drive shaft may be the issue. If it is not connected to the rear differential, and you put it in drive, the truck won't move, and when you go into park, it grinds due to the fact that the transmission is still turning. It may have a bad u-joint or broken hub. It should be removed to inspect and repair it. remove the nuts at the rear part of the drive shaft yoke. It should slide out of the transmission after that. Note that u-joints need to be pressed in.

unless you posses a press the correct way is to remove the drive shaft and take it to a place that can press out the old u joints and install the new ones. dont beat them out it distorts the drive shaft causing problems. hope this helps

How to replace universal joints

I know that I have addressed this. From under the car, remove the 4 nuts that hold the 2 "U" clamps on the rear universal joint. Pull the drive shaft out of the transmission tail section and remove the U joint from there - the same way. Now, with caution not to lose the needle bearings in the U joint caps, install the new U joints and snug the bolts down to about 35 Ft Lbs of torque.

I need to know if I should change the cvg joint on the drive line when I change the ujoint. How do I tell which Universal joint is bad.

u can tell witch joint is bad by putting your truck in nuetral and turning drive shaft back and forth, look for loosness or clicking sound from joint. make sure wheels r blocked so vehicle wont roll

Popping noise from rear end

I would check out the universal joints. Crawl under the vehicle and see if there is any play in them by trying to move around the drive shaft. If there is excessive play then the u joints are the problem. Hope this helps and good luck.
