1993 Mercury Cougar XR7 V8. How do I set the timing please?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

There are two types of 'timing' camshaft and ignition. Lets guess you are talking ignition.

My 2003 freelander crankshaft mark is set as well the cams but piston is not on top dead center on safe mark on sude mark piston is on top but cant turn it gets stuck

I've worked on freelanders loads of times presuming yours is the petrol model when you set the timing up on these when working on them. all pistons are at the halfway mark in the bores this is so no pistons strike the valves when taking the cylinder head off. So the actual mark if you want it set at tdc you need to take off the crankshaft pulley wheel it won't do any harm just four little bolts if I recall when this crankshaft wheel is out of the way you still have the gear there what the cambelt sits round. It is on that gear where the true mark is to set up the timing with no1 piston at tdc. Infact the pulley wheel needs to come off when changing a cambelt make sure the timing marks are set up properly check twice if nessessary then turn engine over one revolution by hand slowly to make sure no internal parts are hitting and timing marks come back together

Timing belt markings on engine

Depends on your engine. You should be following a manual with presicion jobs. Its a must if you want to make sure the job is done accurate. No matter how much experience I have, I always refer to one.

How to set the timing belt rover 2003

with all timing belts, chains, gears, and so on, there are usually markings on the pulleys/gears to match up with the engine to set the timing. One for the valves/cam, and one for the crankshaft...as well as the tensioner, and so on. try looking under a magnifying glass for distinct markings on these gears/pulleys for a proper timing adjustment.

I took the timing belt off and didn't mark it i need a diagram on how to set the marking.

Here are some assistance for you I hope. Remove Your Timing Belt
  • 1

Disengage the negative battery cable in all models.

  • 2

Detach the passenger inner splash-shield and wheel cover, the accessory drive and timing belts, the tensioner and the crankshaft pulley.

  • 3

Remove the spark plugs, catalytic converter and idler pulley in 2000 and older Ford Focuses. These models also require the crankshaft be turned to "Top Dead Center" (TOC) and a crankshaft timing peg be inserted. Turn the shaft to the right against the timing peg.

  • 4

Undo the retaining fasteners and lift the timing belt cover off the engine. Align the crank and camshaft timing marks. Older models call for undoing the water pump pulley and valve cover before locking the camshaft in place.

  • 5

Release the tensioner's bolt. Turn the arm to the right 14 degrees and place a 1/8 inch drill bit in the opening. This secures the belt tensioner in place.

  • 6

    Take the timing belt off.

Install Your Timing Belt
  • 1

Replace the timing belt counterclockwise motion beginning at the crankshaft.

  • 2

Unlock the tensioner. Recheck the timing marks by turning the crankshaft two rotations to the right.

  • 3

Tauten the tensioner's pulley bolt to 15 to 22 foot pounds (20 to 30 Nm) in 2003 and younger models and to 17 to 20 foot pounds (22 to 28 Nm) in older Focuses. Remove the crankshaft timing peg. Reconnect the crankshaft pulley and secure to 81 to 96 foot pounds (110 to 130 Nm) and 81 to 89 foot pounds (110 to 120 Nm) respectively.

  • 4

Replace the splash shield, front wheel, timing belt cover, accessory drive belt and tensioner and any other items that were disconnected.

  • 5

Hook up the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check that the timing belt is functioning properly

Need diagram showing timing adjustment for a 1992 honda accord 2.2 engine see no timing marks how do i set timing

Check the position of the timing marks. The timing pointer mustbe perfectly aligned with the TDC (white mark) on the flywheel orflex-plate; the camshaft pulley must be aligned so that the word UP isat the top of the pulley and the marks on the edge of the pulley arealigned with the surfaces of the head. Additionally, the face of thefront timing balancer pulley has a mark which must be aligned with thenotch on the oil pump body. This pulley is the one to the left crankwhen viewed from the pulley end.

Also, in here, 1994-Honda-Accord-Coupe-Section-01-Engine (page 47 and next / TDC marks) you can find referenece information about Accord Engine.
