2001 Saturn SL Manual Transmission stuck in 2nd Gear

I was driving today and went to shift from 2nd to 3rd and heard a pop where the stick enters the gearbox. Now the car won't change out of 2nd and the stick is loose forward and backwards, but won't move side to side. The clutch seems to be working fine, it disengages the engine, just can't shift because the stick won't gain any traction. Is this a transmission problem or merely something wrong with the shifting mechanism?

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

Sounds like a bent linkage or "horseshoe" clip that holds the shift cables to the transmission. A diagram can be found here and I think you will find your problem; the transmission should be ok if no previous problems existed.

I am working on my 98 right now and am having troubles with the shifting mechanism. The shifter is very loose feeling and sloppy. I went to the parts salvage yard and bought a used shifter assy. with cables and installed them. After closer inspection, I found that there is a plate on the top of the transmission under the hood. The shifting linkage is mounted to this plate. I noticed that a linkage arm is mounted to the plate via a very poor design, it's a pin that has been peened over. Mine was so loose, it almost fell off. I took it apart to repair it and when that arm is off, the trans will be stuck in a gear, but is able to move side to side, just as you describe. The design of this linkage assy. is horrible, I can't imagine it lasting 150,000 miles like it should. I bet this is a very common problem when these cars hit five years old. I didn't want to take the plate off to repair, so I pushed out the pin and welded the arm onto the pin with a washer on both sides. I than pressed the assy. back into the plate, it was by no means an easy or a proper repair, but I couldn't imagine buying Saturn replacement part to fix this. I wonder if there even available. I can send you pictures of what I.m talking about, email if you want, I have a hotmail account and my name is

Saturn no 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 5th gear

Your shifter cables snapped (more specifically the connectors at the end of the cables, they are made out of nylon). Not good news 1) the cables are not made anymore you will have to find a place that might have some still in stock or go to a junk yard; 2) it requires dropping the ******; if your not able to do this yourself, you are looking at about $600 if you can even find the cables. I know what I'm talking about because mine snapped about 4 years ago and luckily some were still able to be found and I have a 98 Saturn SL. Good Luck!!! - Stu

On my 1997 Saturn the transmission is stuck in drive when out into reverse and neutral what could cause that problem?

This is for a manual transmission, where the bushing in the stick shift tends to fall out making the vehicle stay in gear. You will need a bushing to access it you will have to remove the stick shift cover and remove the middle dash to access the linkage there you should see how the linkage has disconnected10_13_2011_3_42_43_am.gif

2001 Saturn manual stick shift just popped and started wobbling loosely while i was shifting from 1st to 2nd. My clutch works but, the stick shift won't go into any gear

sounds like your washers/bearings/spacers finally degraded. To make sure, pop off the little flexy cover. You will see a linkage that goes straight into the transmission. If the bearings there (the little white plastic ones) look eaten up, that's most likely your problem.

My car is a 1997 SL manual swift, and I was driving and my shift got stuck on 2nd but the stick is loose and wont come out of 2nd at all. Someone told be that may be a broken cable, but i dont think manual...

It could be the transmission first of all. It could be the cable if it is equipped. It may be the master cylinder or release cylinder. It could be the release bearing or lever.

I have a saturn sl2 with a 5 speed transmission. i was driving and heard a ping and now 2nd 4th and reverse are gone but i still have 1st 3rd and 5th. i have no idea where to start fixing the problem

If you have inspected the shift linkage and found no missing or loose parts, then unfortunately an internal shift mode fork, syncro assembly, shift rail or possibly a snap ring has been damaged. This is not an easy fix on any vehicle and will require transmission removal to diagnose. Before the trans is removed, inspect the shift linkage while someone moves the gear selector to all gears. This would be the best case scenario, internal damage, of course, would be the worst.
