1998 GMC Yukon ABS light stays on from start to off the engine

Was going to rotate tires - lug nut wqas broken and tire was not able to be removed. after this the abs light came on then went of twice and after that and since the ABS light remains on.

Does this mean that the ABS brakes don't work? What should I do?

Hello,
It sounds like the wheel speed sensor may have been damaged in the process of removing the tire. That would cause the abs light to come on. Ususaly when the abs light comes on it is a sign they won't opperate as abs but only as standard hydraulic brakes. I hope this helps. If you have more questions reguarding this or other conserns please ask me. Please remember high ratings are very important to me.

Thank You,
Roy

i have an 1998 gmc yukon 4wd, and the abs system warning light is on after 5 to 10 minutes of driving, and does not go off till i crank up again from stopping the vehicle. this has recently started, and can not say if this started befoe or after changing a flat tire on the driver side rear. but i think it was before. when i mash the brakes, periodically there might be a stagger, or interruption in the pedal going down to stop the vehicle, but no problem stopping. what does this mean?

More often than not the ABS warning light is acting up. you can tell if you have the antilock brakes working by simply slamming on the brakes, in a safe situation, and see if the brakes pump themselves. if they do, you have antilock brakes, if they don't pump themselves your antilock brake system is not working.

Either way you still have brakes. IF the ABS system isn't working and you brake on wet or icy roads you just have to manually pump your brakes.

Regarding your lug nut, go to another garage and get the broken one repaired before you need it off on the side of the highway. ANY good tire mechanic can remove a broken lug nut.

Change tire

You need a jack to lift the vehicle high enough to get the tire off and the new one on, you need a lug wrench to loosen and tighten the lug nuts and depending on the rims you might have hub caps that are part of the rim or seperate and if they are seperate, you need something to pry them off with. So the proper way to do this is:
Before you raise it with the jack, take the lug wrench and loosen the lug nuts a little. This is easier when the tire is on the ground because depending on the tire location, it will turn if you lift it. So when the weight is on it, it wont turn. Then you put the jach under the car and near the tire you are lifting and you use the jack to raise the tire. Then finish taking the lug nuts off. Remove the tire and put the new tire on. You may have to raise the jack some more to make it high enough. Put the lug nuts back on tight as you can and lower the car. Then tighten the lug nuts again to be sure. You should tighten lug nuts by skipping them. In other words start with one and tighten it, skip the next one and tighten the third one. When you go all the way around, go to the ones you skipped and tighten those.

How do i change the back tire

Find the jack and jack up the rear just in front of the rear tire you are changing. (don't lift off ground completely yet). Using the lug wrench (also called a tire iron) break loose each lug nut.

Finish raising the vehicle just high enough that the tire isn't touching the ground. Finish removing the lug nuts, then pull tire off. Put new (different/spare) tire on, and put the lug nuts back on, and tighten by hand until tire is snug. With the car still raised, lightly tighten the lug nuts, until snug again (by use of lug wrench).

Lower car completely and tighten the lug nuts again (do not over tighten). At all points of tightening lug nuts, do so in a criss cross pattern. Start with one, then move to the one directly across from that, and so on (not all will be "directly" across at all times, so just make sure you alternate and don't go in any consecutive (clockwise/counter clockwise) order.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Flat tire

your owners manual is a valuable source of information, but if you do not have it here is what you do: the vehicle should be on a flat hard surface then you need to locate your jack and lug wrench , with the vehicle still on the groung loosen each lug nut about one turn then make sure that your emergency break is on, place the jack under the vehicle in an appropreate spot to raise the wheel off the groung, once the wheel is off the ground you can remove the lug nuts and pull the wheel off. Then you can put the spare tire on and replace the lug nuts tighten them in a criss cross patern as tight as you can get them then lower the vehicle back to the ground and check the lugs again. I hope this helps, good luck !!

I have a stuck lug nut through the rim into the rear hub due too someone starting the nut with an air gun and cross threading the nut during a tire rotation. How can I get the tire off.

try heating up the bolt with a mapp gas torch and using an air gun to remove it otherwise you may have to take it to your local tire shop and spend roughly $30 on having it removed. to install (once the old one is out) just push it in by hand put your new lug nut on and crank down on it till it reaches the end good luck!
