Iv got a 97 taurus and its over heating all the time. the over flow tank had a crack in it so i got it fixed. i also replaced the bi-pass hose. and put a new thermostat. and its still over heating now it sounds like a old clunker and wont start up on the first or second try.when it is in ideal it wont over heat. when i go to drive it's like the fans wont go on when they need to. i got a new water pump hoping it will fix the problem. but i dont know where it is on the car. i need help
Well you can replace the water pump if you like but i dont think that is the problem, but the water pump will be on the front of the engine, keep in mind that the front of the engine on this car is on the right side of the car where the belt is and the water pump will be down on the front of the engine block, most of the time with these i willput them on the houste and pull the wheel and go in through the wheel well to take the water pump out , if you do this make sure that the surface is clean and use permitex when you install the new pump along with the gasket... now for the fan problem if the fans are coming on but not at the right time you probly have a temp sending unit bad that would need replaced. if the fans are not turning on at all then turn your A/C on and see if the fans turn on if so try replacing the temp sending unit, if the A/C is on and the fans still will not turn on that you should look at the plug on the fan make sure you dont see and sorching or melted connectoin, if this is all on then you should replace the fan/ fan motor...
good luck and comment if you need anything else.
Sounds like cracked cylinder heads or blown headgasket
