How do i replace tail light harness with socket in a cavalier 01

You have a few choices here. Your best bet is your local Chevy dealer. These harnesses are a known problem and they will more than likely have several in stock. you can order them on a site like rockauto.com or ebay. You can also choose to repair the harness yourself. Take the harness into you local parts store like napa, autozone, or Advance and show them the bulb sockets. This will require wiring in the new sockets to the new harness.... preferably by soldering and heat shrinking them back to the new harness. Hope this helps you

Check the lamp sockets themselves. Pull a bulb and see if the connections in the sockets are bad.

You need to remove the trim from the trunk area that covers the lamp assembly that you are after,then remove the plastic nuts from it and remove the lamp assembly.Now all you need to do is to turn the socket and remove it,pull in the tabs on the bulb and pull it out.Installation is reversed for this removal procedure.

try replacing the tail lamp socket. it could be shorting out

If it has a trailer harness ,check this harness,you may need to replace it.

2003 Cavalier's are known for bad wiring harnesses. Get a good technician to find and replace the bad harness and your problems will go away. Sometimes, it may be more than one harness.

it sounds like you are getting corrosion in the socket from water leaking in. Then you end up with high resistance which then causes more current draw whcih then overheats the socket and bulb.
You need to clean the socket very good or replace it if it's on a short wireing harness with a connector. They are @ $20.00.
Then you need to spray some electrical contact cleaner/deoxidizer in the socket to kep it protected. Go to Radio Shack or an auto store to get this.
Finally, look for how the water is getting in there. Sometimes the lens has a gap between the outer lens and lamp body. Seal the entire joint where the lens is attached to the body with a clear silicone sealer. Let us know your outcome. Good luck.

do you have front parking lights? the yellow gunk is gease,
do you have brake lights?
if so try running a new ground too the tail lights

could be the flasher.
