89chevy truck runs roughly

Could it possibly a carburetor problem?

  • duocmarie Aug 25, 2009

No it isn't a fuel injected, it is a throttle body. What do you mean by pulling plug wires? Pull them while the car is running? isn't that somewhat dangerous?

Isn't it fuel injected? More likely:
Pull plug wires one at a time, the one that has no effect isn't firing. Bad plug or wire.

  • Anonymous Aug 25, 2009

Yes, tbi fuel injection. I'd pull pvc valve and shake it up and down. No rattle means it is bad. Then pull plug wires one at a time (and then put back on before pulling next one). If it doesn't get rougher with a plug it isn't firing. Won't hurt you and isn't dangerous. Don't touch vehicle while touching wire or you can get a harmless but jolting shock. If all slow/roughen idle, I'd probably think dirty fuel injector next.

If it has one it might. Many engines of this era used some form of fuel injection. Chevrolet liked throttle body injectors that had only one injector on their V-6's. Does the truck have a check engine light that is on? This means that it is injected and computer controlled. If the light is on, rent a scanner and read the code(s) out to pursue to repairs. If the truck has no such light, then the engine is probably a large V-8 with a carburetor. 'Runs roughly' could be many things--bad spark plugs and wires, water in the fuel, air leaks in the intake manifold area, bad EGR valve, plugged air cleaner, plugged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, and the list goes on. A good mechanic makes tests to narrow the problem(s) down, or you can 'shotgun' the problem with new parts until it works.

Maserati Biturbo has gas puddling on top of the intake manifold in the carburator tray

It sounds like you're experiencing a significant issue with your Maserati Biturbo. Gas pooling on top of the intake manifold can indeed cause rough running and stalling problems. Here are some steps you can take to address this issue:
Check for Leaks: Inspect all the fuel lines, hoses, and connections for any signs of leaks. Make sure that there are no cracks, loose fittings, or worn-out seals that could be allowing fuel to escape.
Inspect the Carburetor: Check the carburetor itself for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure that the float level is correctly adjusted, as an incorrect setting can lead to fuel overflow.
Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator: The fuel pressure regulator is responsible for maintaining a consistent pressure in the fuel system. If it's faulty, it can cause excess fuel to be delivered to the carburetor, leading to pooling.
Examine the Float Valve: The float valve in the carburetor is responsible for controlling the flow of fuel into the carburetor bowl. If it's stuck or damaged, it can lead to excessive fuel delivery.
Inspect the Needle and Seat: The needle and seat regulate the flow of fuel into the carburetor. If either is worn or damaged, it can lead to excessive fuel entering the carburetor.
Check the Choke: Ensure that the choke is operating correctly. If it's stuck in the closed position, it can lead to an overly rich mixture, causing fuel pooling.
Clean the Carburetor: If you find any evidence of dirt or debris in the carburetor, clean it thoroughly. Use carburetor cleaner and compressed air to remove any obstructions.
Verify the Ignition System: While this issue seems related to fuel, it's also worth checking the ignition system. Faulty ignition components can lead to similar symptoms.
If you're not experienced with carbureted engines, it might be best to consult a professional mechanic. They will have the expertise and tools to diagnose and repair the issue. Thank You.

I have a 1995 Mercedes Benz SL 500 that runs rough when started after sitting for several days.

hi Jhlightcap.

The Common Problem: Rough Running Engine

A properly-operating engine should run smoothly and without excess noise. If your engine starts operating in a manner that gives you the perception of "running rough", it is likely due to a handful of common causes. A mechanic would investigate these common causes first in order to rule out a simple explanation for the engine's unsatisfactory operation.
The common causes for rough running in an engine are:
  • Engine miss
  • Vacuum leak
  • Dirty fuel injectors
  • Carburetor problems
  • EGR valve
  • Ignition coil
  • Spark plug wires

1979 ford 460 v8 engine on a ford one ton truck frame under a motor home. would not start. installed a rebuilt carburetor and a new fuel pump. got it to run, took it for a test run of 20 miles. at 10 miles...

Pull a couple of the sp. plugs out and see if there is fuel on them. If not pull the o2 sensor out of the exhaust and see if it starts. It will run rough but should start and run. If it does start you have a plugged catalytic converter or muffler and it is putting back pressure on the engine and not allowing the fuel into the cylinders.

Idles rough.replaced #8 injector have had coil banks replaced

Possible causes: Fuel Delivery or air leak in throttle body. These engines have a problem with the plenum in the throttle body tearing and causing a rough idle and usually codes P0171 & P0174.
Spray carburetor cleaner around the throttle body with the engine idling. If the idle improves for a few seconds that's it. $30.00 and about 2 hours to repair.

My car will start and run and runs good for a few

Carb is a possibility but that sounds more like o2 sensors, when its cold its fine but once warmed up runs rough. Once the engine is in closed loop operation rough run could be caused by o2's, and engine coolant temp sensor. On those older computerized engines those sensors are the major components to tell the computer what to give the engine for a fuel mixture.

My 1996 Buick Roadmaster LTD engine intermittently stalls.

U DON'T HAVE A CARBURETOR SO FORGET THAT, THE FUEL REGULATOR WOULD NOT CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. I AM A GM FACTORY TECH AND KNOW THIS WITH CERTAINTY. U COULD HAVE SLUDGE IN THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL AIRBYPASS VALVE.

Engine run rough at idler and surges

I would change the fuel filter and see if that don't help. You might give it a good tune up and adjust the timing. ( If it has a carburetor then adjust the carb too.

Rough ideal and stalls out

There are two likely possibilities: 1) Old/cracked Ignition system (spark) is being shorted out by water/humidity, 2) Carburetor icing.

1) This test is more effective if done at nighttime or in a darkened garage, as any spark arcing will be visible. Start the engine and let it idle. Use a spray bottle with water and mist your spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and ignition coil with water. If you see spark arcing or the engine starts to run rough or stall, there's your problem, replace the ignition component(s) involved.

2) If your problem only occurs during cold moist rainy weather (ie. 45 degrees or below), especially if it only happens during highway driving, you could have carburetor icing. There is a hose that runs from the exhaust manifold shield to the underside of the air cleaner housing. In colder weather a valve will draw heated air from around the exhaust manifold through this hose into the air cleaner to prevent icing. Either this hose is missing/disconnected or this valve is not working correctly.

Hope this helps!
