The Common Problem: Rough Running Engine

A properly-operating engine should run smoothly and without excess noise. If your engine starts operating in a manner that gives you the perception of "running rough", it is likely due to a handful of common causes. A mechanic would investigate these common causes first in order to rule out a simple explanation for the engine's unsatisfactory operation.

Pull a couple of the sp. plugs out and see if there is fuel on them. If not pull the o2 sensor out of the exhaust and see if it starts. It will run rough but should start and run. If it does start you have a plugged catalytic converter or muffler and it is putting back pressure on the engine and not allowing the fuel into the cylinders.

yes it could be fuel filter,,,it also wouldn't hurt to put some injector additive or dry gas in fuel,,,

Possible causes: Fuel Delivery or air leak in throttle body. These engines have a problem with the plenum in the throttle body tearing and causing a rough idle and usually codes P0171 & P0174.
Spray carburetor cleaner around the throttle body with the engine idling. If the idle improves for a few seconds that's it. $30.00 and about 2 hours to repair.

Carb is a possibility but that sounds more like o2 sensors, when its cold its fine but once warmed up runs rough. Once the engine is in closed loop operation rough run could be caused by o2's, and engine coolant temp sensor. On those older computerized engines those sensors are the major components to tell the computer what to give the engine for a fuel mixture.

U DON'T HAVE A CARBURETOR SO FORGET THAT, THE FUEL REGULATOR WOULD NOT CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. I AM A GM FACTORY TECH AND KNOW THIS WITH CERTAINTY. U COULD HAVE SLUDGE IN THE IDLE SPEED CONTROL AIRBYPASS VALVE.

I would change the fuel filter and see if that don't help. You might give it a good tune up and adjust the timing. ( If it has a carburetor then adjust the carb too.

i would say try replacing the pcv valve and fuel filters if new carbs do the same thing iwould say cut your losses

There are two likely possibilities: 1) Old/cracked Ignition system (spark) is being shorted out by water/humidity, 2) Carburetor icing.

1) This test is more effective if done at nighttime or in a darkened garage, as any spark arcing will be visible. Start the engine and let it idle. Use a spray bottle with water and mist your spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and ignition coil with water. If you see spark arcing or the engine starts to run rough or stall, there's your problem, replace the ignition component(s) involved.

2) If your problem only occurs during cold moist rainy weather (ie. 45 degrees or below), especially if it only happens during highway driving, you could have carburetor icing. There is a hose that runs from the exhaust manifold shield to the underside of the air cleaner housing. In colder weather a valve will draw heated air from around the exhaust manifold through this hose into the air cleaner to prevent icing. Either this hose is missing/disconnected or this valve is not working correctly.
