Unfortunately these cars and the Skylarks by Buick have this issue. The cluster in the dash goes bad and activates the security system, which shuts the vehicle down. Security bypasses won't work due to the cluster issues, and clusters are extremely hard to find. Check some junkyards, but the internet is pretty tapped out.
As with any no-start issue, you will need to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem to proceed. The brake switch problem with the shifter could be a fuse. No start could be a relay, fuse, fuel pump, coil, or a long list of other things. Did you check the computer for trouble codes ?
This is a classic example of a failed or failing antitheft system. Changing out the ignition can cause this. And maybe the ignition you pulled out was failing also. Go to this link, I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for.
as as far as the dying as soon as u put in gear and easy trick that usually helps those is to unplug the the harness that goes to the transmission cause these cars when the torque control solenoid fails it wont unlock and on ur car thats the only thing electronic is the torque convertor
Your ignition is shot would be the first thought, since it won't turn to the off position. Is your car engine shut off? If so try and start it or turn the key forward as far as you can and then try to turn it back. If no luck, remove negative battery cable and call it a night.
The service manual. But you could search the Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Bonneville forums for info.
I did a 1997 Malibu and after removing the appropriate dash covers, you had to pull the instrument panel, which just pops out. Then you got to the switch through the opening.
is there a chip in your ignition key if there is you will need to have the key programmed and coded to your car this is a security feature that gm uses on most models newer than 1996
Could be any of the following: New switch it is defective You did not get all the wires back on A wire broke while you were changing out the switch Bad fuse Loose connecting in the circuitry (hardest one to solve)
