2004 subaru forester, 99,000 miles. Check engine

2004 subaru forester, 99,000 miles. Check engine light came on while driving home. Idles rough/car shakes/resolves when idle increased to 1500 rpm. Car " misses" & hesitates on acceleration....also particluarly while crusiing at 34-45 mph. Engine runs fine at speeds of over 50-55 mph. Sometimes the Check Engine light will flash on/off. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.

First suggestion is go to AutoZone and get the error codes read (for free) -- this'll probably tell you exactly what the problem is.

sounds like it may be secondary ignition. how do the plugs look? are the wires leaking? how about the coil posts, are they corroded?

is the check engine light on? If it is it would not hurt to get the codes and see if that gives you any leads ion where to look.

ROUGH IDLE

Did you replace the plugs with the same plugs (Manufacturer) as the plugs you had in there. Some cars are very picky with plugs. ie: some Japanese cars will only run well with NGK Spark Plugs. Try to use only what Subaru recommends in your engine for the best performance.
