I have a 1998 jeep XJ. after driving about a 100 miles on the hiway it starts to loose power. I put a new PCM and still have the problem. Could it be the throttle posistion sensor?

and is a 100% free manual from maker JEEP.

yes door lock solenoids can fail easy, for sure this old

Where are the PCM connectors located?

On the PCM are the connectors and all remote to it,. all sensors and actuators and power. (simple , all inputs and output to it)

USA, LHD, = :Left hand drive.

chapter 8D-5 in the OEM manual

XJ jeep, (chickodee) POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
The PCM was formerly referred to as the SBEC or
engine controller. On XJ models, the PCM is located
in the engine compartment next to the air cleaner
(Fig. 12).

If I change radio in a 99 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, will it mess with the anti theft?

It most likely will!
I've had such problems with one just like yours.
I'd be really sure you don't start something you would rather not have the money to fix.
If it were me, I might even think about leaving the present radio hooked up, and adding a radio separately wired to get the sound you want!
I think you should be able to detach the speaker wires without activating the alarm, and you might use them for your new head, or something.
God bless your efforts.

How to remove a dashboard from a 1994 grand cherokee

XJ 94
its not bad, wana bet? 90% are not.
(i used to fix them)
so the PCM,. the FSM book covers that.
why not read that.
JEEPJX
PCM is baD ONLY WHEN inputs good, and its outputs are bad.
(and outputs not shorted) !!!
(same or all computers on earth)
lose of power to PCM or ground
or bad power.(weak, or intermittent)

Got DTC errors , post them?
innova 3140 best bank for buck on 93-95 jeeps. !!!
that is a low priced scan tool

are you having ASD relay issues?

engine bay next to Air cleaner.

to diagnose any car, a real scan tool is best.
or you will need a full lab of meters and scopes. like me.
the scan tool show up things the keyon/off trick does not.

1999 jeep showing code p1686

P1686 is a SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) no signal code. The keys have tiny chips in them that have to match the SKIM module for that vehicle, if they dont match then the engine will stop running after a few seconds. This is to keep theives from making a key and driving away with you vehicle.
First of all, do you have 2 keys? If so try the other one, if it works, then the other sentry key (the one that didn't work before) has bit the dust. If both do not work and both seem to have same symptoms, then it is quite possibly the module under the sterering wheel cover attached to back of ignition switch which reads the sentry key and if it gets signal from sentry key, then it sends a signal to pcm allowing start up to complete with no shutdown. If this unit is bad, unfortunuately just replacing it is no help, because after replacement a DEALER must then program both the unit and your keys. Make sure you give the dealer both keys, as both have to be reprogrammed to the new unit, if only one is done, the other will not work.

I can't start my 1998 Grand Cherokee 4.0L. it would barely start for weeks but i always managed to get it started until now i tested the battery and the starter which both passed. any sugestions would be...

this is an epidemic for jeeps built from 1993-1998-the problem is possibly your PCM which is your vehicle's computer-it is located right behind the radiator overflow jug on the passenger side-there are poor connections inside the PCM and the 3 wiring harnesses conected to it and jeep/chrysler did a poor job connecting the unit securely to the fire wall-if the vechilce would stall durinng driving or even in park or at idle and became worse and worse then you can bet 100% its the PCM..you can try wedging a piece of styrofoam or somthing of that nature in-between the PCM and overflow jug-(basicly just tightening the wiring conects to the PCM)-see if it will start then-if it does start wiggle the PCM around and if the vehicle stalls thats your problem...the wedge between the jug and PCM should work, but it is a temp fix and basicly a "jurry rig" you will eventually need to get a new PCM-you can find them on e-bay for a decent price,100.00 to 200.00 dollars but you must make sure the numbers on your old PCM and the one you purchace are IDENTICAL-if the wedge wont work your PCM connections are probably too far gone or possibly a different problem all together. go get your codes read at a local autozone or checker/o'reilly they usually do it free.
