year, matters.as does engine size

its a bad speedo flex cable that year, if odometer is dead too.

facts:

the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a vital part of the cruise control system. The cruise control system uses the same vehicle speed sensor as the engine control system and speedometer. This speed sensor is mounted with-in the speedometer in the rear of the instrument panel or in the side of the transmission case, depending on the year and model. To gain access to the vehicle speed sensor the instrument panel must be removed on some vehicles. Since instrument panel removal is a large task, check if the engine control computer is not reporting any faults with the vehicle speed sensor. If the PCM does not report trouble codes for the VSS the problem with the cruise control is most likely not the sensor.

others have the VSS in the transmission tail shaft or 4wd transfer case end. (4wd?)
VSS bad on newer cars make the transmission not shift right.

some cars have both, and if the trans vss fails can switch to the speedo vss2.
