1997 lincoln continental check steering assist light

My "check steering assist" light comes on periodically on my 1997 lincoln continental. I turn the engine off & restart it and it resets it until it happens again. More often than it used to. Has power steering fluid.
Please help.

Is the fluid full enough? there should be a dipstick to tell where the level should be. Also is the belt tight enough? Wires loose?

Try to bleed the steering hoses. With the car running, turn the wheel left and right all the way 3 or 4 times. That should do it, and mark off 1 more thing to try.

I had the same problem from my 1997 Continental too. Oddly enough, when I checked the power from my alternator (on the battery), it was extremely low (7.7, instead of in the 13's). I then took off the alternator and brought it to O'Rileys/Kragen and had them check it, and it was only working at 50%. It turns out that, as a safety measure, the power steering will cut off if the power is to low. I replaced the alternator with a new one (cost $174.83 with tax for a new one) and now my power steering is perfect. As an added bonus, I thought my AC needed charging, well, it didn't. It just wasn't getting the power it needed either. All is well with my baby! Hope this can be a help to someone...

This is kind of like a check engine light, but for the steering and air suspension system. I recommend you take it to a dealer to scan for the codes, then diagnostics can be performed from there. I don't think a regular scan tool would be able to retrieve these codes.

Power steering mones in the corners

Check power steering fluid first. I can always tell when a ford is coming up the street because I hear the power steering pump first. Good luck , hope it's nothing serious

1997 Lincoln Continental

Most likely a motor mount causing the "thunk". This will only get worse until its taken care of. The rubber bushing around the mount itself wears with age. Really couldn't tell you about the check steering assist apart from checking the power steering fluid level. Good luck on your problem.

Steering error

I had this same problem. I kept getting the check steering assist message on the dash of my 2001 licoln continental, and two weeks later my entire tire blew off. The power steering control connector was bad, and when it couldnt go any farther the hoses snapped an the preesure blew the tire off as I was driving. To fix all the damage cost 900 dollars. Maybe you can avoid this by taking it to a shop now. I waited and it could have cost me my life.
