A/C and heater only works on high

I have replaced the blowor motor and regulator and i still have the issue where it only blows on high (5) and my lower speeds dont even allow my a/c to be on at all.

  • sabeteur Aug 21, 2009

I replace the blower motor regulator which is located right next to the blower motor and both of those are brand new.

    Please define 'regulator.'
Do you mean the speed setting itself?

This type of failure (pretty common) is normally caused by a special kind of resistor that has taps for the different speeds.
When these fail, only the ends of the resistor are still operative and that is the highest speed.

There may also be an additional relay that connects to the taps when lower speeds are selected.
If this relay fails, it could very well interfere with AC operation.

I had a problem like this on my 1999 grand prix gt. My headlights would cut out on any setting less then high (5), and my re-defroster wouldn't work. After ALOT of research I found out the it is the ignition wiring harness. I went to Advanced auto and they got me that for i think around $100ish. I hope this helps

This did work for me. It fixed all my problems... The heater/AC, redefroster, and headlights

Check your blower motor resistor, it may be bad.

Blower motor will not shut off

I can't speak to the cost, a local dealer can do that. As for the reason the fan runs on, it sounds like either a stuck power relay (location should be in the owners manual) or a bad fan speed regulator. Since the fan is stuck on high, I suspect the fan speed regulator is bad. On some cars the regulator is part of the fan assembly, and on some it's separate. Also, there is a possibility you can repair the circuit board, assuming it's something as simple as a burnt out diode. Best of luck!

2001 explorer SportTrac blower only works on high

you need to replace the blower motor resister in the heater plenum case, 2 srews, 4 or 5 wire connector. If it blows again, you will have to replace blower motor as it is drawing too much current & failing the thermal fuse in the resistor pack.

I have a 2000 Nissan Xterra and the 2 blower fuses keep blowing causing the the heat not to work. When I went to switch out the fuses the first time the motor and heat worked right away but only for a...

you have a problem with the motor circuit drawing more amperage than the fuse will allow. it could be the motor itself, or something that is keep the motor from turning freely. otherwise it's a wiring problem. i would suggest unplugging the motor, and then turning on the fan. hopefully, if there is some short to ground, which sounds unlikely, the fuse will blow. otherwise i suggest replacing the blower motor. good luck!

My heater fan does not work. I replaced the resistor. It still does not work. I also lost my high beams and turn signals and power door locks. Any good ideas.

Rap on the motor on high speed and see if it starts to run, if so , replace the motor. High beams and turn signals are both on the combination switch. Door locks?? Ck fuses , switch.

My heater only work on high and will not blow out defrost

IF THE BLOWER MOTOR ONLY WORKS PN HIGH THEN YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR LOCATED ON THE SAME HEATER BOX AS THE BLOWER MOTOR

Heating and a/c off switch does not work and the fan is stuck on high. the heater will not turn off, it just stays on.

HI. This switch is called a resistor switch. It regulate the current to the blower motor. The switch circuit is damaged, and it will need to be replaced asap. Once replaced, this issue will be solved.

You will need to remove the AC/Heater cluster assembly, in order to access the actual switch.

1997 Bonneville SSE, when the heater is turned on, only cold air

you may have a failed blend air door motor/actuator. this part will regulate the amount of air from the heater core depending on the temp setting on your electronic climate control unit. if it has failed, it will be stuck at the temp that it was last set at when it quit working. it is also possible the heater core may be plugged up, but using the gm recommended dexcool coolant and flushing it out every 5 years, it should not be plugged up. you can pull the 2 heater hoses off the heater core on the passenger side of the engine compartment firewall and see if the heater core is the problem. caution-do not use a high pressure air hose to blow through the heater core as this could damage it and cause a leak!

Blower motor doesn't blow anymore, This blows

If it blows only on high speed, it is the resister.
If it does not work at all, check fuses first. See owner manual for location.
Then check blower motor by jumping 12 volts from battery to blower motor. Make sure ground is jumped too.

If it works now, it's the control panel. If not, it is the motor.

Blower Motor —Front Removal and Installation
  1. Prepare the vehicle for blower motor (19805) removal.
    1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
    1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 .
  1. Detach the speed control servo.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    1. Position the speed control servo aside.
  1. Position the coolant expansion tank/windshield washer reservoir aside.
    1. Remove the screws and the nuts.
    1. Position the coolant expansion tank/windshield washer reservoir aside.
  1. Remove the blower motor.
    1. Disconnect the vent hose.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    1. Remove the four screws.
    1. Remove the blower motor.

Also,

Heater Blower Motor Switch Resistor(s)
The front heater blower motor switch resistor has the following features:
  • The assembly is located in the engine compartment on the evaporator housing (19850) next to the blower motor assembly (19805).
  • Three resistor elements are mounted on the resistor board to provide four blower motor speeds.
  • Depending on the heater blower motor switch position, series resistance is added or bypassed in the A/C blower motor circuit to decrease or increase A/C blower motor speed.
  • An overheating device (thermal limiter) will open the resistor coil circuit when the temperature reaches 121°C (250°F), interrupting the blower motor operation in all speeds except high.
  • The thermal limiter cannot be reset and is not serviceable.
