1997 2.2L base Cavalier idles rough and randomly stalls

check timing, adjust valve clearance, check vacuum leaks. these are some that need attention.

sounds like the fuel pick up tube inside the tank is loose or maybe the filter is clogged. also low fuel levels will do this

run fault codes to find the faulty sensors

Try this:
-Check fuel pressure. (read in its repair manual to see how much it suppose to be.) If it's low then the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump is defect.
-Is it fuel injector...? Then check its resistance of each injector when it's cold. If it's not within its specification then replace new one

Engine stall or RPM fluctuates at idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
