92 Century Suddenly Dies When Warm

Hi all...
I have a 92 Century (3.3L V6, ~120000 miles) that will run/drive fine, good idle, no power loss, no sputtering etc. for about a mile or so then it will just completely and suddenly die. Engine dies, all instrument lights go out, no radio, no power steering, no electrical at all...dead. When I turn the key there is no activity at all...no fans whirring, solenoids clicking, etc. After anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour it will start right up and run fine. Actually, I can sit and idle for at least an hour (haven't sat longer than that idling) but as soon as I drive away from home...about 1/2 a mile to a mile away and we are dead again.

I am going to take it into the shop but would love to hear what others think could be the culprit before I foolishly okay tons of tests and repairs that don't fix the problem.

I am adept enough with a multimeter to do some testing if pointed in the right direction...just not sure where to start with this.

Thanks so much....

1996 mercedes c280 dies when put in drive

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

My 1994 buick century runs good for acouple miles and check engine light comes on. Then it start floodin out and eventually dies. After it cools off it will start and run again for acouple miles. Its...

without knowing much more info about you engine and systems on board, I can give you the most likely.
If you have a triple coil direct ignition then the coil pack is the item to test. ( they fail as they warm up ) If you are describing ( flooding ) as a lack of power, this could be a fuel starving condition and no Black smoke coming from the tailpipe, So if that is the case, look at testing the fuel pressure and or fuel filter.

Those are the most common causes of failures .

Good luck .

Start car, runs good, drive for a mile and instant loss of power, power fluxuation, rough idle, accelerate out of it at idle, idle good then when you accelerate or try to put in drive it dies

Have the codes checked and post them to better give me an idea it may sound like it could be a clogged up catalytic converter but checked the codes if it coincides with what i just told you then it is the catalytic converter let me know something thanks.

Ford 460 loses power then dies. Starts back up. Idles fine.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.

Engine does not run smooth

Sounds like a fuel problem, Bad fuel pump relay of actual fuel pump check relay first may be working intermittently.( Replace relay first before going to pump). Good luck thanks for using FIX YA

Starts fine, Idles fine, Drives Fine for a while

you might want to chk. the crank sensor and or cam sensor. sounds more to me that it could be fuel problem. chk. fuel pressure. pump could be on its way out. don't be fooled by hearing the pump running as they sound like they are pumping but there not, at least not enought pressure to keep it running. pressure should be around 50 p.s.i.
