I was told that the fuel filter might be clogged but i cleaned it and it only pings going uphill under load.it sounds as if i am driving over sand or gravel and its hitting the underside of the vehicle. on the diagnostics nothing came up as a problem because the enginr wasn't under load when they did the test...2002 hyundai santa fe 2.4l
Depending upon your vehicle, that could be caused by not using the proper octane fuel. Look in your owners manual for the proper octane fuel to be used in your vehicle. If that does not solve your problem you could have a bad lifter or rocker inside the head of you engine itself. Have a qualified mechanic test drive the vehicle so that they can hear what you are hearing. Unfortunatly with all the moving parts your engine and vehicle has it is often hard to accurately diagnose a noise without actually hearing it. I hope this helped you out. It would be gretly appreciated if you could rate my ansnwer, Thanks........MIKE-
WELL LOTS OF THING CAN COUSE THIS BAD FUEL AND TIMING IF THIS HAS BELT WHEN WAS IT REPLACE OLD BELT CAN DO THIS OR NEW ONE NOT IN STALLED RIGHT OR LOW OCTAIN FULE CAN DO THIS HOPE THIS HELPS P.S BAD LIFTER CAN DO THIS BUT THEY NORMALY MAKE NOIS ALL THE TIME

As a vehicle ages, the timing gets off, and the Octane of fuel will compensate for an out of timing vehicle.
Bad gas is main culprit, also dirty/clogged fuel filter, or clogged carberetor or injectors!
Use a "GOOD" fuel system cleaner for the next 3 tankfuls, and use a higher octane fuel at the same time!!! This is important. After 3 tankfuls and 3 additions of a Fuel System Cleaner, go back to a lower octane fuel. Drive up a hill and see if the problem is gone. If not, then either take it to a mechanic and check timing, hopefully you replaced the fuel filter by then.
caused by hot and lean.
which engine.??? at least 3 choices.
most have knock sensors. and will not knock.
if it really is knock then that is serious.
knock means detonation or ping.
if its just noise say that,
real PING happens under load.
1: check fuses.
2: check knock sensor for outside damage.
3: SCAN the PCM. do you have any DTC errors/
4: do a full 60k tune up. maybe its lean because the fuel filter is clogged.
Pinging or detonation is normally caused from incorrect fuel mixture---timing or not changing gears when the load for the engine becomes excessive for the revs. Left unchecked it will damage the pistons. Use a higher grade octane rating fuel (give ethanol mix a miss). Have the ignition timing checked and corrected. and ensure that the auto is changing when it should be or change gears more often and keep the revs up.
I would change the fuel filter anyway. Fuel filter problem manifest under a load usually. It is easy to do and cheap. This will eliminate one possible cause for your lack of power. Another reason may be your timing. If it pings going up hill also, you can ****** the timing a couple of degrees and/or try some fuel additive or higher octane gas or octane booster.
a knock sensor is basically a resistor and a spring, and what it does is it reduces valve ping. Valve ping is when the fuel is not properly burned and tries to explode before the valve is fully closed and it will make a pinging noise when under load or at higher RPM. If the sensor is bad it can cause detonation, detonation is when the fuel explodes before the valve is closed and can cause a cracked, or exploded piston, bent valves etc. Your problem does not sound like that of a bad knock sensor, predominantly you will only hear the "ping" under load and not at idle and if it was bad your check engine light should be on. this sounds more like a rod knock. change the oil again and use only AMSOIL and an amsoil filter, amsoil is proven to last longer than any other oil, 600,000 miles without a change, or a filter change.
problems you described would suggest you need to replace the spark plugs, a bad one tends to fail under loads like going up hill. the other thing you could try is to get a better fuel grade, that would correct pinging noises uphill. and throw in some fuel injector cleaner every 2000km, it makes a happy running engine
do not use any fuel additives at all. and only use 87 octane fuel nothing higher. 4.6 and 5.4 ford engines do have a pinging sound especially with a load. but it is normal
The knock is caused by either timing issue or a lean cylinder condition, have you checked the fuel pressure?? has the fuel filter been changed?? A bad knock sensor will not set a light unless it is open or disconnected.
