1997 chevy lumina get warm and then stalls will not restart

I have a 97 lumina that after about 1 1/2 hours of driving it gets about half way up the temp gauge and then stalls. it will not restart untill about 15 minutes but will only run for about 5 minutes and then stalls out once more. if you let it cool about 1 hour it will run untill it gets about half way up on the temp gauge and you go through the same thing. I have replaced the following with no luck. ignition modules and plate, plugs, wires, egr valve. checked fuel pressure, vacume and compression and found them to be right on manf. specs. I've been an industrial macanic for 34 yeras and repaired just about everything including cars but I am stuck on this one. any and all help is needed please.

just got back from buying a code scanner.no codes are comming up. i expected that as the dash service engine soon light was not on. I'm running car now to try to sumulate driving it to see if it will overheat and shut down. one note to mike the one fan will come on by its own but I wired it to turn both fans on at once. it has a 180 degree thermo in it and if i figure out the dash gauge right it seems to stay at that temp. but at that temp it will shut down. if it shuts down in the driveway i'm going to try to cool the crank sensor to see if it restarts and runs. like i said any other ideas are more than welcome. thanks

a final comment that I do apologize for not posting before now. The final problem came out to be the fuel pump was going bad slowly. Yes I know everyone says that they just go but mine would run for just so long and then quit. When I replaced it it took the old one and was pumping water in a bucket with a valve to restrict the flow at first it just ran but when I shut the flow don to a trickle it stop in about 30 seconds. as i had it hooked up to a battery it started itself after about 90 seconds ran for a 60 seconds and shut off once more. when I took it out of the bucket it was quite warm. as long as it flowed unrestricted it ran but build up any pressure and it would stop. as I said i did this in 2009 and forgot about the post so I am sorry about this coming out so late. the car has run like a top ever sense it now has 330000 miles on her and I'm looking for antoher lumina to replace her.

It could be caused by a bad sensor. You need to scan it when it stalls and won't restart. Most common one to go when hot is the crank position sensor. Make sure the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor isn't clogged or leaking. It could be the fuel pump as they run hot and stop, then start working again when cooled down. Next time it stalls and won't restart try using starting fluid. If it starts then it's probably a bad fuel pump. If it doesn't start pour some cold water over where the crank position sensor is located and try starting it. Again if it starts now you know what to replace.

Hi, It sounds like you have a bad temperature sensor. Which is a plug like sensor that screws in. You will find it on or near where you coolant hoses connect to your engine. usually near the upper hose. Which would be screwed into the neck that connects to the head or on the head itself. Also check your radiator it could be plugged into the back (facing the fan). also if you have not changed your thermostat it wouldn't be a bad idea to do that also. which you will find under the neck of where the hose connects to your engine. Usually 2 or three bolts. Make sure your engine is cooled down when doing this service to your engine because of built up pressure in the coolant system which will cause burns or worse. I hope this helped you out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my answer, thanks MIKE-

Hi jim i'm back once more. I just read that you replaced the thermostat and that you put a toggle switch to engage your fan. If your fan doesn't engage on it's own . That is definatly your temp. sensor.

I can't open the hood of my 97 chevy lumina?

Take a flashlight and observe the latch, under the hood, and try to find what exactly is catching on what. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry away whatever is catching, and open your hood.

97 lumina, 3.1. Starts runs smooth, drive for 30

I just recently have been fighting the same problem with the same make/model/year vehicle. For myself, I would drive off and on through the day and it would run fine. Then suddenly after a start it would run rough and die. I would have to wait 20 to 60 mins before it would start again. I had it checked and fuel pump was only putting out around 19 psi. It should be around 41 psi. Had fuel pump replaced and no more problems. Furthermore, now it runs so much better. It's funny how over time I didn't notice how the performance was slowly degrading. Unfortunaley fuel pumps for this car run around $300.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. If you have the 97 chevy lumina Car 3.1 you dont have a distributor cap. People really dont need to post unless they know what they are saying.

Now your have 3 coils on the top of your engine water could have easily got under one of them.

Now did the car not turn over at all or did it keep turning over but did not fire up.
