You can find a detailed write-up on how to bypass the VATS system completely (including the TDM) here: http://newrockies.ca/vatsbypass . This was the only thing that saved my Buick. I had a faulty TDM, car was cranking, then starting, but dieing after a couple of secs.

Do your keys have a little resistor pellet in them. The problem sounds like the security system.

Wiring diagram of 2006 Ford Explorer steering column

hello tanya
no engine told ,no VIN
does the starter crank the engine fast. heard or seen?
it fails to crank or
cranks fast but fails to start the engine and run over 10 seconds long.

if starter is dead or silent or only clicks say so.
my guess is NO CRANK"starter is dead"
and guess #2 you hear the starter relay click.
and starter is DEAD, engine will not crank.
keep in mind we are deaf and blind ,helping.

does the dash cluster error lamps show IMMO security failing? "immobilizer"???????
if yes try the 2nd key, given to you day 1 new car.
if not IMMO failing then

jumper cable start the car, as in call AAA club tow say to the guys JUMP my battery..
OR CHECK BATTERY CABLE LUGS FOR RUSTY AND OR LOOSE
OR LOAD TEST THE BATTERY.
END POST FOR NO CRANK
Comments:
THERE ARE 6 CAUSES. no crank. (DOES IT CRANK IN NEUTRAL>?
IF DOES CRANK , WE HAVE 50 CAUSES.
OF NOT STARTS. AND A TON OF TESTS USING TOOLS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN.
do you want guessing or testing
nobody ever says what they want here
call for mobile car repair
tow car to a shop.
jump the car.
take battery to a shop ask them to test it/?
they charge it and load test it.

08 dodge magnum intermitant crank( clickity click)

I call that chatter and means the starter solenoid
sees only 8vdc from the battery , cranked.
there are 6 causes, due to 6 things(parts) make cranking go.
why do all that, and not do jumper cable jump starts first. if works then battery is NO GOOD>in car.

posted this 100s times.
both cable ends (x4) not loose or rusty.to bat.
1: battery good means alternator not bad too.
load test the battery or jump cable jump it.
we know the starter is good, last words of your post.
2: then key switch good, and ST pin sends 12vdc
to the PRNDL switch.
3:PRNDL on/in the tranny must work in park and neutral both so all techs and tow truck mean test neutral cranking next or gets egg in face.
4: next up (it is a series path of DC ST )
the starter relay closes, called energizes.
and sends 12vdc to the soleniod and starter cranks.
5: starter bad , no it is not.
6: wires bad.(and or connectors)
did not jump start your car
did not charge battery and load test it. oops

comments:
NO 15 year old battery is good, my 50 year record is 10 years life, (and not common)
did not crank in N neutral PRNDL.
did hot wire starter and starter is loaded for bear (good)
and wires. yes can fail #6
so all techs know that and out pops Mr./ DMM set to volts to find where the path fails easy.
normal cranking voltage is 11vdc.
the 1 volt loss is battery internal resistance at 300amps load.
8vdc the solenoid chatters like mad. a huge key fact.
it only takes a voltmeter to find this failure.
after jumper cable jumps fail,
if not fail Jumped, the battery is bad,(or rusty lugs)

good luck , be happy for 6 and not 50 engine failures and lots of tests. that.

we charge the battery first then load test it , a tool..
or have shop test your battery ,even walked in.
or find a good battery out of 2nd good car. TRY IT.
or jumper cable jump start your car off 2nd running car just like AAA Auto club tow trunks do endlessly.
day by day.
or the voltmeter across battery terms (clean) show 8vdc cranking is a bad battery.

not withstanding driving car the battery dicharged dead , alternator dead.

Why won't my 2012 Suzuki Grand Vitara start?

ill answer for NO ELECTRICAL POWER :
sure and is easy with any DMM meter, got one? any $20 DMM.
my guess;1
engine will not crank
dash lamps out.
head lights out. dead.
post systems of electrical system , all parts that work and those that dont work, and problem is easy.
cleaned battery terminals.
tried borrowed battery that reads, 12.6vdc ? (charged is 12.6)
2012 that is in warranty car.... ?
my guess on 2012
jumping a car, that is battery jump starting.
a battery can short, and no jump start on earth will start shorted battery in car. but does lay down some big sparks, or burns up cheap walmart cables.
if the car will not crank, say just that, my starter motor will not crank
jump started from live running other car.
if true then make sure headlights work , if they dont work fix that first.
HL must always work, even keys in pocket.
best is to put a fully charged battery in the car, jump starting can cause
surges that can damage sensitive electronic$$$, do jumps as a desperate measure,
with a charged battery,
1: Head lights work, no fix that , use voltmeter
2: cranks robustly.
no , wiggle shifter lever, (on A/T cars the park switch blocks cranking) On M/T the clutch blocks cranking.
with any dMM
measure battery voltage before crank and during.
12.6v good. reseted.
cranking.
0 to 10v bad (weak battery or shorted starter motor)
11 and above good. and must crank, if not , starter is bad.
to prove starter is bad, check voltage at starter solenoid coil wire lug.
it must be at 11v cranking , below 8v it chatters, and fails.
if at 0v cranking this lug that means the Key start line is failing.
A/T switch not closes, or bad ignition switch.

Car won't start without a jump but battery okay

wont crank or wont start.??
no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic)
that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch.
ill answer for, wont CRANK !
it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started.
1: bad start
2: bad wires to same.
so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny.
cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad.
if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead.
easy, huh?

Car want start. might be starter or solenoid.

If you can find the starter solenoid, try jumping across the two posts. If it cranks,it needs a solenoid. If you jump the large post to the small post on the starter, and it doesn't turn over, you need a starter.

I have a 96 Dodge Intrepid and it wil not start. it clicks when you try to start it. All of the lights in the car are on. the battery has been charged. it cut off on me a few days ago and i thought i...

solenoid clicking, troubleshooting steps: Run 3 tests to troubleshoot.

1. try to jump start at battery terminals
2. unhook the jumpers and try to jump the solenoid following procedures at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over (see picture there--make sure car is in park or neutral)
3. Only if #1 and #2 fail to crank the engine, smack the starter motor (not the solenoid) with a hammer and then try to start.

Based on results of above tests, here are solution options:

If smacking the starter is the only test that worked, you have a dead spot on the starter commutator--replace the starter.

If it will jump start but will not crank by jumping the solenoid, check to make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight.

If it will not jump start and will not crank even by jumping the solenoid, the problem is either the cable to the starter or the starter/solenoid itself.
check the big red wire that goes from the battery to the starter and make sure it is strong and tight at both ends. If that is good, replace the starter/solenoid.

If it will not jump start but will crank when the solenoid is jumped, the problem is with the start circuit not getting sufficient current to the solenoid. This usually only happens when there is a separate starter relay (in the engine compartment relay box) that is worn out. Replace the starter relay.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Car is not starting with the ignition switch, but will start when you ground the starter; it will only stay cranked for about 3 Seconds

You are not grounding the starter but jumping across the solenoid? First place to check is the ignition security chip in the lock cylinder. Then the relay, ign switch itself and neutral safety switch.
