Hi Keith. I'm Tim Dorton. It's hard to tell without using a lab scope. Is it making noise? If so, then the bearing inside are about to go.If running bad, the Cam sensor is inside. In either case, check a local junk yard, there are a few distributors around. At least swapping it out can tell you if that's the problem. There are many You Tube videos on how to replace.https://youtu.be/PbJTP9sTF08

SOURCE: have put 3 alternators on this 99 frontier what
Hi,
Did you replace those alternators with new ones or just from a refurbish shop/used parts?
Actually you could just replace the internal parts of the alternator. You could get the original parts in any Nissan Parts center.
The part that always breaks down is the IC regulator assembly, that controls the voltage output. It is much cheaper than buying the whole alternator assembly!
Water is the number 1 substance that breaks down any electrical system, heat and dirts that accumulated in the system. Those are the ones that makes alternators go bad.
Hope that helps you out!
Thanks for using Fixya!

usually its the heater fan resistor that is bad. it controls the fan speeds for blower motor. The blower motor is mounted under the glove box. It is in the corner somewhat covered by the kick panel. The card, at least on my pathfinder, is held in with 2 phillips head screws. The plug has 4 wires, one large wire and 3 smaller wires. You should see it very near to and parallel with the firewall.
The card has an on board fuse that is not replaceable. It is located on the passenger side fire wall to the left of the blower moter under the glove box. Held in with two silver phillps screws
