1996 Ford Taurus SHO 3.4. Intermittant starting problem. Welded cams. First instance a couple of months ago. Had it towed to a local shop. Once there the car started right up. They kept it for the day starting it up about once an hour. About a month ago it did the same thing. From the towing incident my conclusion was to, basically, rock the car. That worked! Yesterday, same problem. No amount of jostling helped. Won?t start. So far: Checked the fuel filter, fuel pressure - both good; replaced the cam sensor; and, about to replace the crank position sensor. As of today, it is parked. Will not start. An issue that may or may not be related. On several occasions, after running the car for about 50-100 miles, it will be difficult to start after it sits for anywhere from a short stop at a grocery store to a couple of hours. It will not idle. After holding it at a high idle (2500-3000 RM) for a minute or so, it will idle fine.

The intermittent hard strarting may be due to a bad prom in your computer module. I have the same problem wiuth a 2000 Taurus and foiund that there was a Technical Service Bulletin listing specific module codes to look for in the computer. If your car had that specific module, it needed to be replaced. As for your current starting problem, you should check your Idle speed motor. If it sticks shut, it will cut off all the air to the motor and prevent starting without holding the gas pedal down a little bit will "crack" the throttle open and allow air into the engine so it will start. If it is sticking, you can remove the throttle position sensor, clean it out with WD40 or CRC and then energize the sensor by plugging it back in and energizing it by turning the key to the "on" position. If it is working properly, you should be able to blow air through the two holes when the Sensor is Energized, and no air when it is not energized.

Try replacing the gas cap,may be vapor locked, check throttle position sensor by holding the pedal to the floor while cranking,if it starts then replace the sensor,if not it probably works

How do I tune up a 2001 taurus ses?

There have been no tune-ups in 25 years

Technically since 1980 some 32 years

Only spark plugs left from those days

The ECM,PCM in your case,or the computer
if that suits you,it does the tuning

That is a term the repair shops should stop using,
a long time ago, they have enough issues, without
misleding people.

You should have a maintenance log, for all your vehicles
You should have at least, an owner manual

Clean MAF Sensor ---every year
Brake Fluid---every 2 years
Air Filter,Cabin Filter---every 3 years
Spark Plugs,Trans Fluid, Power Steering Fluid ---every 3 years
Gas Filter--Every 3 years

Brakes--- need to come apart for inspection, rust removal & lube-every year
The System should be Scanned a couple times a year for stored data,
codes & other issues
If you look into the computer & monitor how it see things, you may avoid
problems & break down repairs

Just a few items, always something to do,have to be proactive

The starter keeps dying on my Taurus and needs replacement. last one is 3 months, before that 3 weeks and one prior less than 1 yr. Mechanic said he even smoothed out a rough spot on the fan and can't...

Can I ask where are you getting the starter from? is it the right size for you car. I had a 96 Taurus and only had to mine once. Lost mine a few years ago in the hurricane( live in New Orleans). ford has several different starters for the Taurus depending on engine size. Call your dealership to find out what starter you need. Your local auto parts store then can get you the right one. You can change this yourself. It takes about 45 minutes for a beginner. If you want to change it yourself. I'm here to tell you how. its just a ratchet, extensions, sockets, and a couple of wrenches. that's all, oh, and a little elbow grease.

1995 Ford SHO

your best bet for a diagram is to ask for a suspension printout at your local dealership. Or take a look under any 86-95 Ford Taurus SLO, SHO, or Sable and they use the same design (the SHO just uses slightly different parts. Here is a link though for a SHO parts list with part numbers. Hope this helps.

Wont start

check all wires running from the batt to the starter motor. if the wires are tight and fitting quite well, its the starter itself. remove it and test for voltage and motor function at your local auto parts shop.
