If the transmission is not hurt, it may just be a simple fix by replacing the reverse solenoid. The bad news is that it's in the valve body in the transmission, if there is an Auto Zone around your area, have them scan the cart for any DTC codes and hope that there is a code in the history that relates to the transmission issue. Auto Zone scan free of charge and if there is a transmission code, that would help address the transmission issue and if it's just a reverse solenoid. That's good news, since it cost just a little more then a transmission oil and filter change. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon.

Best we can do is suggest that you take it to a repair shop preferably Aamco or similar for a transmission diagnostic and repair estimate.

Have 1999 saturn sc2 coupe engine will not turn over has automatic transmission

Not turning over means that you try to start it and get NOTHING. If the engine cranks and wont start that is a different issue.

I have a 1997 Saturn SL1 with an automatic transmission. The car will not operate in reverse. The car appears to operate well in forward gears shifts smoothly.

Common problem with several causes. The neutral safety switch could be bad, will need some knowledge and a scan tool to diagnose. Also valve body could be bad , will need to have a professional look at it most likely.

1997 Saturn SC2 squeals very loud the first 3-5miles

Try replacing the belt tensioner. Comes out easily, once you figure out access to it. Remove inspection panel inside front passenger side wheel well. Tensioner is right there, two bolts. If the spring gets weak, the belt will squeak.

1997 sc2 saturn automatic

I had a 1991 Dodge Caravan that did the same thing. I had a transmission rebuilt because of the problem you describe. I was told it was a seal inside the transmission that was leaking fluid from an internal chamber when the engine was at an idle (like it is when you are at a stop sign). A redesigned seal fixed my problem. I would bet if you gave it a little gas with one foot and kept your foot on the brake it wouldn't act like it had dropped out of gear. If you have the money for a transmission rebuild that might be something to consider but if you are tight on money, a bottle of lucas transmission additive might help your problem. That seemed to help me so I could get some money together for a transmission rebuild. I realize that most mechanics will say that your transmission doesn't need an additive of any kind, I also realize that sometimes in real life you have to do what your pocketbook/ wallet can afford.

Good luck.
