1996 Jetta how do I go about testing the headlight switch? Where can I find a diagram of the terminal layout on the back of the switch? I just want to make sure the switch is the problem before I dump $100 on a new one. Any advice in diagnosing the headlight prob is appreciated. Marker/tail lights and the like come onwith the switch, but the brights will only come on momentarily when I use the dimmer switch, and the low beams won't come on at all. I jumpered the wire and they lit up, so its not the bulb or something silly like that, fuses are also fine.

on these cars if 1 of the bulbs blow out then you will have to replace them both because they wont work. replace both headlight bulbs and they will be just fine

There is usually a relay under the hood that controls these. They could be run in a series which would explain your lack of a blower motor also. Good Luck.

There is no recall regarding the headlights on that vehicle.
What typically happens is the wiring inside the light housing melts and the bare wires randomly touch each other.
You can verify this by taking one of the plastic covers off the back of a headlamp housing and checking out the three wire harness inside. It is extremely common for this to occur on that vehicle.
The wiring can be repaired, though difficult without removing the lamp.
If you wish to replace the wiring with factory replacement parts, there is no service parts for the lamp, you must replace the entire housing unfortunately. For this reason most people just repair the melted wires.
