Likely the gears or bearings have failed. They are very expensive to replace and must be "set up" by an expert or it will fail again. Best real option is to find a replacement in a scrapyard. If it's a 4x4, you need to count the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear. The number of teeth must exactly match on the replacement or it will destroy the transfer case. (ring tooth # divided by pinion # gives you the ratio...so for example if after you do the math the answer is 3.23 that's a 3.23:1 ratio.)
Constant howl....usually wheel bearing.
Howl on acceleration.......usually rear pinion bearing (the bigger of the two on the pinion) in the diff (rear axle)
Howl on de-acceleration....the front (smaller) pinion bearing in the diff.(rear axle)
SOURCE: Howling in the rear end.
I have a front wheel drive and at 120k I had noise in the back. It turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. It was tough to diagnosis because the quick check is to see if the wheel wobbles when pulled, but mine didn't. It wasn't untl they put it on a lift and found the wheel wouldn't roll freely.

SOURCE: Howling noise from rear of SUV
its suonds like rear wheel barring u need to eras the car and turn the rear tire to see which side exactly then replace ir
SOURCE: A howling noise in the rear end.
The final drive (diff) could be low or out of oil. Have a look around inside of the rear wheels for any oil leaks. Also ckeck the pinion seal. But get oil into the filler plug before you do anyting else.
