Okay i have a 96 Cadillac Deville with a northstar engine. It can drive good sometimes then other times it will overheat real quick, especially on the highway. I have replaced water pump/W new belt, thermostat, and it still overheat's. I also got another radiator, NOT A NEW ONE a used one at a wrecking yard.
The car can be around 230-240 degrees and i feel where the fans are, there is not any hot air coming off of the radiator, it is cold air. I do not lose coolant, only when the car get's very hot and out the overflow. It has great power, and sometimes i can drive it a distance and it not overheat at all, actually stay at around 210, then other day's i can drive it around the corner and the temperature raises considerably quick. I have done a compression test on the spark plugs, the coolant did not shoot out of the reservoir to check the headgasket. All spark plugs looked good, and like i said the car has very good power. There are no leaks, i can tell the coolant is circulating good, but the air coming off of the radiator is not that hot at all. It is not taking the heat away from the engine. Should i spend the money and get a new radiator? Could this still be a bad head gasket? Even with great power? Also one more thing... When the temperature get's around 230 driving good sometimes itll say... SERVICE EMMISSIONS SYSTEM and the temperature raises after that all of the time.... I have checked the codes also, and they mean nothing! Any help id appreciate it.... really need this car to start running, only transportation!
I say it may have not been bled to get all the air out ,thermostat working?also could be a cracked head.it is smelling antifreeze going thru the exhaust causing the emmisions light to come on.
If everything is circulating properly, your heater inside the car will be toasty. Suggest you take rad cap completely off, put heater to hot and let it run (Idle) for 15 minutes. You should get heat out of the heater. If it's lukewarm, it hasn't been properly bled. Make sure you keep adding water to the radiator as needed while it's running.
Let me know if this helps.
