HELP - bmw 328i 1996 e36 - power steering problem -

Hi to all, bmw 328i 1996 e36 - power steering problem - the power steering only works over 3500 rpm, worked fine until i abused it showing off to my mates doing doughnuts ( only myself to blame i know ), i have drained the system and changed the fluid but it has made no difference, there are no leaks coming from the rack or the pump, i am completly baffled by it, any help would be much appreciated as it has been like this for 6 months now and i have now got poppeye arms from it lol.

The pump itself may not be suppling enough power. If it's making noise it either the Rack or Pump.

Engine is bugging out as if its shutting off half the engine!

Crank and cam signals probably out of sync with each other

Looking at the fuze box in a 1996 BMW 328i, the drivers seat adjustment fuse is #40. Where is the #40 fuze located?

Fuse box should look like the one shown on these pages:

Fuse box diagram BMW 3 E36
http://bmw-e36.com/repair/8-bmw-e36-fuse-box-diagram-318i-1996.html

The longer single row of fuses is #31-46 (46 is closest to the double row of fuses).

Hope this helps!

Where to find the steering fluid cap on a 1996 bmw 328i

With the hood open and the engine running, have someone turn the wheel so you can spot the power steering gear box. There will be two lines from that box leading up to the power steering pump. That pump is driven by the serpentine belt. Atop that pump there will be the filler cap you are looking for.

Hope that helps.

BMW 1996 328i E36 cnvertible Driver side window will not go down and back up when door is opened and then closed? It did this once before but started working but now it has started again.

micro switch may have failed. have a very close look in the door latch fixed to the car...there should be a very small square pressable switch.. open the door and press your finger inside the latch against the little button, the window should drop and raise. If you dont have one there its on the inside of the door lock mechanism.

Power steering

bad electrical signal to the pump. pumps thinks its going fast. the valve that controls the fluid flow to make steeering stiffer at higher speeds is confused.

use electrical contact cleaner and d-electric grease to fix contact problems.
pop the hood and cleans as many connections as possible, let dry and apply a small amount of di-electric grease to those connections, then re-connect the plugs. even do the dme connections to the main wiring harness.

this will solve many electrical contact problems seen in older cars.
