the wire inside the bulb socket could be rusted and broken. wire connection broken before it reach the bulb. socket mostly burn up or dirty, missing a seat. replace socket and test the socket wire connection. wrong bulb also
I found the fuse. There is one in the door for the front Lighter but the one for the rear lighter is under the dash with all the relays. You have to remove the bottom of the dash panel and the fuse is in the panel with the relays.
For 1998 VW Passat V6 the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram. The cigarette lighter fuse for 1998 VW Passat V6 is placed in the fuse box / relay plate fascia 1, (driver's door open). See pictures below:
Two years later and you solved my dead cigarette lighter. manual says fuse 35--but it did not say to check 38 on the left fuse box. Thanks--blown fuse and everything works. Thanks
