Got new brakes and rotors & after 30-40 mi. of driving it stinks bad and by home, it was smoking. Help

One or both of the brake callpers are not releasing when you release pressure on the brake pedal so you have continued contact between the brake pads and the brake rotor. This will overheat the brake pads and rotors and produce a burning smell and smoke.

If your brakes were working fine before the people you used to fit the new pads and rotors got hold of your car then the most likely cause will be faulty installation. For example if the inner and outer brake pads have been reversed when fitted in the brake caliper this will cause your brakes to bind up as you have described. If the brake caliper slides have not been properly lubricated with the correct product (or not lubricated at all) the calipers can bind up and hold the pads on the brake rotor.

In your case I would suspect the new brake pads have probably been reversed during installation and that is what I would be looking at first. But there are other possibilities that may also need to be checked.

You can take the vehicle back to whoever did the sloppy work and get them to fix it or take it to a competent mechanic very close to home who can check over the installation work. (Those that did the work should have road tested the car before giving it back to you and binding brakes should have been noticed if they were half competent). You don't want to be driving far when your brakes are like this.

2. Your brakes can also bind up as you have described if there is a blockage in one or both of the flexible brake hoses connected to the brake caliper. Usually you won't get two at once though. When this happens the blockage in the line will not allow the brake fluid to flow back up the lines when you release the brakes (and there is no pressure pushing it back) so the brake pads will not release from the brake rotor. The flexible brake lines need to be replaced every 7 -8 years or so as they deteriorate badly from the inside but outside they may look just fine. If one or more of your flexible brake lines were bad before you replaced the brake pads and rotors then fitting the new pads and rotors will really show up the problem.

3. You can also have a brake binding problem if the piston in one or more of your brake calipers is corroded and will not retract back into the bore when brake pressure is released. The piston or pistons in the calipers press on the back of the brake pad unit and force the pad onto the brake rotor. If the pistons are corroded (which will often be the case in old calipers) they can bind up in the caliper bore and not retract back into the bore when the brake pressure is released. If you had this problem before the new pads and rotors were fitted the problem will show up much more now that new pads have been fitted. It is a simple task to check if any of the pistons in any of the brake calipers in your car are binding up and not retracting as it is any of the installation work that has been done.

Some businesses will do very sloppy brake work and not check that everything is freely moving correctly when the brake pedal is applied and released as you need to when replacing brake pads.

Iv had a couple of mechanics trying to fix my brakes bt dey can't get it write. de problem is dat it binds de front wheels. changed de calipas, booster, master and yet its not fine

What normally cause the brakes to bind?

1. Pistons in the brake caliper binding so they will not slide back when pressure is released. If you have new calipers that should not be the issue.

2. The brake caliper is not sliding on the slide pins so that when the brakes are released the caliper sticks in position. If the calipers are new and the slide pins are properly lubricated that should not be an issue.

3. The flexible brake lines have deteriorated and are blocked so that when the brakes are released the brake fluid will not flow back up the lines to the master cylinder. You may be able to push brake fluid through the lines and overcome the blockage under full braking pressure but when that pressure is released the blockage in the brake line will not allow the fluid to flow back. When that happens the brakes will remain applied to some extent. If the flexible brake lines are more than 7 -8 years old I would suspect they might be the problem and when they deteriorate they do so from the inside and often near the ends.

4. The brake pads when fitted to the caliper must be fitted in the correct position. There is an inner pad and outer pad. If they have been reversed so that the outer pad is fitted in the inside position and the inner pad in the outside position, when you apply the brakes they will bind. Don't assume the pads have been fitted properly because so called professional mechanics still make this mistake when fitting brake pads. This is the first thing I would check before looking at anything else.

This is a very frustrating problem for you because you expect professionals to find problems and fix your brakes the first time.
I hope this helps and you manage to sort the problem.

How do I adjust parking brake

If Disc brakes jack up wheels , make sure the cable is not binding or frozen , pull hand leaver on three clicks, adjust cable till brakes just start to bind, release hand brake and check the wheels are free to turn. Drum brake check cables are free, back off cable till slack, check lining to drum adjusters are free and adjust if need be, pull hand brake on three clicks, adjust cable so brakes just start to bind release hand brake and make sure the wheels are free to turn ,

Right front brake locks up with medium braking

Jack the vehicle up, off the ground and check each wheel to see if there are any brakes binding on.
If you find one binding, then release the bleed nipple on that brake and check again. If the brake becomes free, then you have an issue with the ABS pump. If it makes no difference, then that brake is stuck. You'll need to try pushing back the piston on that brake. If it's stuck, then free it or replace it. Also check [if it's a caliper brake] that the slide pins are free and lubricated.

If you have no brakes binding, then you may have an issue with the ABS pump.

My break light swithes on sometimes without me even pressing the breaks. The break light also sometimes stays on even when I have taken my feet off the break. I have tried changed the break light switch...

Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

Brake light stays on just happened 143000 miles

Check your brake switch as it could be faulty hence causing a close circuit which in turn causes the brake light to stay on.It is normally located at the top of the brake pedal.Hope this helps.

2005 Dodge Caravan . Brake lights stay on !

Try pulling back on the brake pedal if lights go off then either switch adjustment or the brake booster is allowing the pedal to drop down if it's running (vacuum) or brake pedal mechanism is binding.
