The engine check sign is on and the problem is the converter. my car is Toyta corolla 2003. how much does the converter cost for a replacement or is there any other option/solution to this problem?
thank you
They are between 375 and 500 most of the time a converter is getting to mush unburned fuel sometimes you can use 93 or higher octane and it will purge the converter

there is a service bulletin for this.
The trouble areas associated with this code are as follows: 1)Gas leakage on exhaust system 2)Oxygen sensor 3)Heated oxygen sensor 4)Three–way catalytic converter
The idea is to check for exhaust leaks first then the front sensor and rear sensor. If these all check out then the cat needs to be replaced.
CODE PO420 CATALTYLIC CONVERTER SYSTEM FAULT.ITS SAYING FAULTY CATALTYLIC CONVERTER.IF IT BEEN A WHILE IF YOUR CAR HAS A WHOLE LOT OF MILES ON IT.YOUR SPARK PLUG CHANGE IS DUE AT 120000 MILES. DUE A LITTLE TUNE UP CHANGE AIR FILTER AND FUEL FILTER.SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY ENGINE FAULTS BAD PLUGS DIRTY INJECTORS ANY THING UP SET FUEL SYSTEM CAUSE CAR TO RUN RICH.EXCESSIVE UNBURN FUEL WILL GATHER IN CATALYTIC CONVERTER CAUSE IT TO BURN OUT.SHORTING LIFE OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
Yes you could. If you look in to the diagonostic box beside the left hand strut mounting in it inside the lid of the box the re is a diagram bridge TE1 and E1 and switch the ign on . The Eng. symbol sight will start flahing. If it flashes continuesly there are no trouble codes in store. If it flashes in longs and shorts there are faults and you need to take note of them and refer to a manual or even ask somebody like me.
A p0420 code is set when the computer determines that the catalytic converter isn't doing it's job. In almost all instances that code can't set as a result of a bad o2 sensor so they probably didn't have to be replaced. The catalytic converter will need to be replaced, prefferably by an oem part. This can be pretty expensive and should be considered before purchasing the vehicle.
I have replaced a few bad converters on late model subarus in the past few years.
in reality nothings happen, and your saying what do you need to do so you will not encounter this problem again well honestly you cant depend on life on catalytic so i suggest to do your general tune up like changing spark plug, wires, check timing, fuel filter, oil change the way they should be change so it helps the engine burn near stoichiometry because during the oxidation happening in your catalytic if your engine rich or lean or misfiring it could cause a defective catalytic converter.
